ACT Labor will build a new Canberra Aquatic Centre in Commonwealth Park to replace the ageing Civic pool after securing support for the land use from the Albanese Government.

The project will include a 50-metre pool, a program pool for swimming lessons and a splash park, but not a diving facility.

If re-elected on 19 October, Labor says it aims to start construction of the new aquatic centre in the next term of government.

The exact location is still to be worked out with the National Capital Authority, but it is understood the government has proposed a site on the left as one enters the park from the footbridge across Parkes Way from the Civic pool.

The project would free up the Civic site for the planned Convention and Entertainment Centre.

A spokesperson said a Labor government would complete a detailed design for the facility in the first half of the new term, aiming for construction procurement to commence shortly after.

“We will work in collaboration with the National Capital Authority on all necessary steps for the project,” the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said Labor would undertake a short round of community consultation to finalise the scope of the project, with a focus on the best site to relocate the ACT’s diving facilities.

Once the new aquatic centre was complete, the ageing pool would be decommissioned, allowing for the construction of a new Convention and Entertainment Centre on the site.

Work had already commenced on planning for the City Convention and Entertainment precinct.

“Labor will conclude design and business case development on the Convention and Entertainment project in the next term of government, with an aim to have the project construction ready by the time the new pool in Commonwealth Park is complete,” the spokesperson said.

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will announce the new Canberra aquatic centre project at today’s ACT Labor 2024 Election Campaign Launch.

The Canberra Liberals have also said they would build a new aquatic centre in Commonwealth Park to replace the Civic pool, but they have committed to starting construction of a convention centre on that site in year three of the new term.

The Canberra Olympic Pool opened in 1955 and has been plagued by leaks and continual repairs in recent years.

The dome over the 50-metre pool was erected in 1992 and made it possible to continue swimming through the winter months.

At first, the dome came down for the summer, but in 1996, it was made permanent. In 2008, the dome was replaced as part of a $2 million refurbishment.

The site was identified as a potential site for a new stadium, but the government ruled it out last year because of size constraints and cost.

Then Chief Minister Andrew Barr announced that it would be the site of a new convention centre and 7500 to 8000-seat entertainment pavilion, with a completion date of 2033, about the same as for the stadium, now slated for Bruce. Both will need a Commonwealth contribution.

The Liberals made their announcement last week.

Either way, a new pool will have to be built.

Why are they so focussed on the old pool becoming a convention centre when there is one just across the road, with the Royal Theatre? How many do we need??

AB is perfect, never makes mistakes. He is so thrilling!

Allan Border? Yes, in many ways, an almost perfect cricketer.

I remember going to the Olympic pool in Civic when I was a kid. The diving pool was the undoubtedly the highlight. All eyes were trained on the towers watching all sorts of bombs, horsies etc for style and who could make the biggest splash. Great summer memories. Include a tower pool and give the kids some great fun as well as serious divers a place to practice. Don’t miss the opportunity.

How about this government come clean on its flawed modelling for the drive to 100% electrification. How much more do ratepayers have to drop into the black hole of the Labor/Greens budget to support mismanagement?

At least there are trusted organisations out there who continue to seriously and scientifically call out this government’s flaw-ridden modelling for the transition to 100% electrification:

* The release of the ACT Government Integrated Energy Plan (IEP) has sparked further debate, particularly regarding the lack of costings and modelling for apartment and townhouse residents, a segment that represents around 40-50% of Canberra’s housing Census, 2021.

* The IEP has been described as having a ‘tick box’ consultation process, failing to adequately address community concerns.

* A significant amount of territory land is controlled by the National Capital Authority. This land is not impacted by the IEP, therefore gas connections are still being applied for and approved. MPA members advise that there are several new and significant developments on NCA land which will have new gas appliances and connections. This situation will continue indefinitely.

* Research by Senator Pocock’s office through the Parliamentary Library indicates a higher cost to electrify than figures publicly released, and no figures have been released for apartment dwellers.

Remeber before voting in Katy G, as treasurer she’ll have control over the finances to give benefit to Canberra. Then once there was the treasurer and had to be impartial.

Labor critisied the sports rorts as vote buying, despite the tram and now this.

I wouldn’t trust this government to deliver a water tight pool. Its basically guranteed to have holes!

Yeah, sure. Not.

The Libs already announced this same policy last Saturday lol

S&P is concerned about the ACT Government’s levels of expenditure and the CM had admitted that projects now had be to be slowed down.
A completion date of 2033 puts this election promise well and truly outside the term of the next Assembly. Its a bit like the 2016 election promise of duplicating Athllon Drive!

Next term? Yeah right. Even assuming a compliant and responsive NCA, there is zero chance of ACT Labor delivering a major infrastructure project like this within a four year time frame.

I will definitely be joining any protest against the destruction of the civic pool. It is a strong part of Canberra‘s history and needs to be left alone. All this bloody lot can see is what can be knocked down and redeveloped to make money on. I’ve really had enough of this lot.

Absolutely. It should be heritage-listed and brought back to its former glory. This government is so out of step with what is happening with pools/lidos all over the rest of the world.

Andrew Savoulidis5:38 pm 14 Sep 24

I do agree, but it’s so easy for them because it modernises the city all whilst their precious hands remain moisturised.

The fact that the new pool is installed in Commonwealth Park after the Federal Government’s approval is all so convenient.

My question remains about accessibility in the new pool and the future traffic around the old pool site.

Questions they are clearly absolved from.

Oh yeah forgot the obvious more installs for North Canberra…but nothing for the rest of the town.

Labor – free beer tomorrow

They have made and broken several promises to replace the civic pool, why should we believe this?

Divers miss out again.
