Liberals promise cleaner streets

zed on the streets

The Liberals’ Zed Seselja is promising the obligatory million in extra street sweeping:

“A good local Government doesn’t overlook the upkeep of their city, and the Canberra Liberals understand the importance of basic local services,” Mr Seselja said.

“That’s why if elected, we’ll inject an extra $1 million over four years into Canberra’s street sweeping program, to:

— Lease a sixth street sweeping truck
— Allow local communities to ask for their neighbourhood to be swept
— Publish an accurate schedule for street sweeping
— Sweep intersections more frequently (especially after accidents)
— Sweep bicycle paths.

I agree with the deposit scheme, people are less likely to throw away something of value, and others are more likely to pick up valuable trash. Gives kids another way to earn some pocket money. We could also mandate that takeaway containers and wrappers be quickly biodegradable.

Just close down McDonalds and you’ll solve about 25% of the rubbish problem.

I’d say closer to 50%.

Better yet, put a $1 deposit on all throw-away food wrappings and containers.

Just introduce a container deposit system, such as implemented in SA 30 years ago and half of Europe and you’ll have half the glass rubbish left over on the streets. I still remember walking along Torrens St in Braddon on Sunday mornings to get breakfast and dodging glass bottles everywhere…

Oh but that’s right, the Libs friend Kate Carnell has opposed it, in her new role as overlord of some waste of space body.

Hopefully they run one of them up and down the centre lane of the parkway more regularly. It seems to attract a lot of rubbish along the divider.

I noticed this today.

They could also do better with road kill. Plenty of it around Canberra

Bike Paths! Yay.

The can start with the path around West basin of LBG, and maybe that sand trap in the middle of the path might finally be removed after… oh, 15+ years!

Unfortunately they’ll need a bobcat to remove the debris build up of on the paths near Sterling Oval, so sweeping it won’t do a fat lot of good.

Ugh, too true.

Good to finally see attention to basic ‘council’ services.

Just out of interest, when was the last time someone got done for littering or losing their load on the way to the tip?

I’m all for keeping the city cleaner but I’d like to see some of these trash bugs paying for it.
