Lighting up Canberra's dog parks

Shane Rattenbury has announced plans to install lighting in Canberra’s dog parks, in response to dog owner’s requests so that they can exercise their dogs after dark.

“Lighting has already been installed at the Belconnen, Forde and Yarralumla dog parks and will be lighting up the Casey and Tuggeranong dog parks in the next couple of weeks,” Mr Rattenbury said.

“Much like street lights, these lights are controlled by sensors which turn on just before dark and off just after dawn.

“Each dog park will have a light over its main entrance and two flood lights within the park, with the exception of Belconnen which has a light at each of its two entrances in addition to two flood lights.

“TAMS will monitor the lights over coming months to ensure their effectiveness. I encourage the community to provide feedback on their experiences using the parks at night so we can continue to provide a service that meets the needs of dog park users.”

I can’t help but wonder about the cost of this venture, although sure to be a snip compared to some of the other big projects and at least there is a better chance to avoid doggie parcels that may be left lying around.

It’s dark at 5.30pm and 6.30am in the mid-winter so yes, lights are a great idea

Who want’s to walk their dog at night in winter in Canberra?… sounds like a waste of electricity to me

I bet ACTEW are happy for the government boosting their power bill…Who’s gonna pay for all the extra electricity being used.

Grateful for lights…., where are they? Small dog park at Belconnen is still in the dark.
