A young Indigenous man has died after a fight in Civic this morning and a male person is in police custody.

Detective Superintendent Scott Moller said police were called about 9:45 am to Garema Place where the victim had collapsed and died after an altercation but would not say how.

He said police had chased the suspected attacker on foot and apprehended him in Garema Place.

The male person in custody was helping police with their inquiries, Superintendent Moller said.

He said it was early in the investigation and police were looking at all available evidence including CCTV.

He would not say if police were still looking for a murder weapon.
