Mapping the Northside with Andrew Leigh

By johnboy - 19 October 2011 10

andrew leigh and a giant map

The indefatigable Andrew Leigh has launched the “Mapping the Northside” project at the Belconnen Arts Centre.

Mapping the Northside is an exciting project where I’ve joined forces with the Belconnen Arts Centre to help people learn about more great places in our region.

An enormous map (3m x 2m) will be displayed in the Belconnen Arts Centre from today until Thursday 17 November upon which you can locate your favourite places in the Federal Division of Fraser – the northside of Canberra. This is your opportunity to tell everyone about your special, important places and environments and let your imagination run wild – you can include any kind of creative response, such as a drawing, photograph, story, poem or even performance work.

I encourage everyone to call into the Belconnen Arts Centre, see the big map and have a think about your favourite place on the northside. You can also suggest a favourite place to Andrew.Leigh.MP@aph.gov.au or info@belconnenartscentre.com.au.

What’s Your opinion?

Andrew Leigh’s THE PEOPLE’S MAP OF THE NORTHSIDE , HA HA – and no it is not the a communist manifesto of North Korea, but an pathetic attempt in self promotion dressed up as a community initiative at OUR tax payer $$.

Designed for people with bionic vision (ANDREW – we’re an AGING POPULATION – YOU SHOULD KNOW), using data relevant 2 years ago (HELLO, it is 2013!) and posted on a sheet of paper (WITH THE EXPECTATION THAT SUCH A CRITICAL DOCUMENT WILL BE FRAMED IN GOLD ON EVERY HOUSEHOLD’S MANTELPIECE, I PRESUME) it is described “THE PEOPLE’S FIRST MAP OF THE NORTHSIDE”.

SO OUT OF TOUCH, SO ARROGANT, SO STUPID…

Wait, what? The Member for Fraser is channelling Sarah Palin? (Refer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=6w1SA1E2DrY#t=27s )

I wonder why Andrew Leigh left off the suburbs of Belconnen and Gungahlin from his map of the Division of Fraser…the people in those suburbs (and I used to be one of them) vote too!

The reason Leigh left those suburbs off the map is because he knows that the true believer zombies north of the Lake will still vote Labor no matter what. He knows he has a job for life.

This arrogant and smug attitude was exemplified by his comments following the latest disastrous opinion polls for the Gillard government. He said he takes no notice of polls, and that “polls are for dancers and firemen”.

Yes, folks. Your taxes at work.

Canberra Times revealed today that Andrew Leigh has only visited Jervis Bay Territory – part of the electorate of Fraser – once since he was elected.

You’d think you’d go there more than once in 15 months even if it was just for a weekend away! (It’s a nice place to stay.)

Your mistake was thinking this is a map. Actually, it is art, a representation of North Canberra by an artist, and therefore somewhat distorted.

At least that is the only reason I can suggest for some of the oddities in depiction of the border and roads, for example the missing bit of the Barton Highway where it bypasses Hall.

What a piece of crap! So this is what an economist thinks is art.

Not only lame but I’ve just noticed that it is spatially incorrect.

seriously lame map.

As someone who makes maps for a living, this sort of lazy offensive tosh offends all my sensibilities. Its not hard to open a GIS program and add the roads layer and some suburb labels and press print (about 30 seconds work), but an hour invested by someone who actually knows what they’re doing would produce something actually worthy of the Belconnen Arts Centre, and maybe provide extra utility for the general public.

I can’t see the complete map in the photo…but I wonder if Jervis Bay Territory (which is part of Fraser) is included or not in this project (especially given the front page story in today’s Canberra Times).

Would anyone like to help me with a performance piece about my favourite part of the Northside? I’ll require a few hundred cars to create an impromptu carpark out the front of the arts centre for about 8 years. Tentative title is “Great Delays Expected”.
