While dining-in in Canberra is off the cards for who-knows-how-long, along with foreign travel, you can still take your tastebuds to Greece via the Hellenic Club Woden drive-thru and enjoy the Mediterranean diet at home.

Dishes featuring humble traditional ingredients such as olives, lemon, meat and the freshest of seafood are what I daydream of when planning my fantasy Greek Island holiday.

For now, I will be fulfilling my wanderlust by noshing down on some of the most popular and iconic dishes of Greece at home. Dishes include moussaka (which is to the Greeks as lasagne is to the Italians), a rich tomato meat sauce layered with eggplant instead of pasta sheets. It will pair well with juicy, tender souvlaki (meat kebabs) and pan-fried calamari doused in lemon juice.

Calamari and Greek salad

Calamari and Greek salad are available for takeaway from both the Woden Bistro and Fillos Taverna + Bar.

It’s all available during the Canberra lockdown daily for pick up from the eateries at the Hellenic Club.

The Hellenic Club was first opened in 1979 as a meeting place for the Greek community of Canberra and has since grown into Canberra’s largest entertainment venue. The Woden Bistro has been a staple of the Canberra community for decades, and Fillos Taverna + Bar has become a hugely popular spot to enjoy an authentic Greek dining experience since it opened in 2017.

Both restaurants are independently family-owned, and along with the third eatery that operates at the club, Ginseng Chinese, they all quickly pivoted with the announcement of the current lockdown. They’re offering pared-back takeaway menus for both lunch and dinner.

To ensure minimum contact and maintain safety, pick up is done like a drive-thru. All orders are placed via call or text message, the restaurant advises of the pickup time and you call them from your car when you arrive. They bring the goodness to you.

The mouthwatering Moussaka from Fillos Taverna + Bar.

Highlights of the Fillos Taverna + Bar include a $25 per person feed-me pack consisting of mixed souvlaki, grilled lamb cutlets, chips, pita, Greek salad, pan-fried calamari, and halloumi cheese. The Woden Bistro features club classics including steaks, schnitzel, and Greek dishes of beef or chicken souvlaki.
