The ACT Government is showing “extreme arrogance” by starting works at the Hume prison site before lodging a development application, according to Federal Liberal member for Eden-Monaro Gary Nairn.
Mr Nairn represents the residents of Jerrabomberra and Letchworth, who have rather had their noses put out of joint by the ACT Government’s decision to build a prison on the Hume site — rather too near their houses for their liking. Unfortunately, not being ACT residents, there’s not that much they can do about it (at least until the DA is lodged).
“Hume was selected because the residents most affected, those living in Jerrabomberra and Letchworth , don’t vote in the ACT,†Mr Nairn said. “The people of Jerrabomberra and Letchworth will oppose this gaol when the DA is finally lodged but it will be on planning grounds.â€
Mr Stanhope defended himself on the ABC this morning, saying the work being done is only preliminary site works and that a DA would be lodged within the next week.
On the subject of the DA, he said, “The residents of Jerrabomberra, Gary Nairn himself and all residents of Canberra are invited to be part of that and we will of course respond to that input but at the end of the day a prison will be built at Hume.”
