A new ski lodge has opened near Perisher Valley and is the only freestanding, self-contained lodge available to the public within Smiggin Holes.
Owned and operated by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, the extensively renovated Numbananga Lodge sleeps up to six guests and still has vacancies for the 2018 ski season.
Dating back to the 1960s, the ski-in ski-out lodge has local heritage significance and was previously used as temporary NPWS staff accommodation.
The lodge’s refurbishment was funded in the 2017 NSW Government budget, with $7.6 million allocated over three years for the re-use of existing buildings in national parks for short stay visitor accommodation.
NPWS spokesperson, Mark Lees, said the arrangement to provide visitor accommodation delivers a revenue stream for NPWS to invest back into park management to support conservation and public use.
“It’s wonderful to see Numbananga Lodge, which is of local heritage value and is part of the cultural landscape of Smiggin Holes, transformed into nature-based accommodation for the public which makes best use of the building,” Mr Lees said.
The lodge has three refurbished bedrooms, as well as a new bathroom, kitchen, living room, drying room and a deck with a barbecue.
It is nestled into surrounding sub-alpine woodland and provides spectacular views, especially at sunset, over Smiggin Holes, Pipers Creek and the Perisher Ranges.
The alpine lodge is located within minutes of the ski runs and restaurants of ‘Smiggins’, making it a great base for enjoying the ski resort.
It is also only a five-minute drive to Perisher Valley, billed as offering some of the country’s best skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
Avid skiers can also ski to Perisher from the lodge, or catch the nearby Link T-Bar.
In spring and summer, the newly-opened lodge will also make a good base to explore the walks, bike rides and fishing spots in Kosciuszko National Park.
There is a minimum two-night stay at Numbananga Lodge, which charges the following rates:
- From $350 per night – October to May
- $700 per night – June
- $1,000 per night – September
- $1,500 per night in peak season July – August
Due to the lodge only recently being opened, bookings are still available throughout the 2018 ski season.
