Nothing good happening with the Emergency Department

By johnboy - 13 May 2013 7

Normally when there’s hospital data out the Chief Minister can be relied on to put a rosy spin on even the worst numbers.

Today there has been curious silence.

Liberal Leader Jeremy Hanson on the other hand has lots to say:

ACT Opposition Leader Jeremy Hanson said today that the emergency department waiting times over the past three months have declined, which again demonstrates that nothing has improved in emergency department waiting times since the data altering scandal last year.

“Overall, only 50 per cent of patients were seen on time. For urgent patients the number seen on time has again deteriorated to an all time low of 41 per cent,” said Mr Hanson.

“These results are unacceptable and are clearly affected by the scandal that we saw last year, where emergency department results were being fabricated on a massive scale over a number of years.

“As a result, the resources that needed to be put into our emergency department haven’t been delivered. For the past seven years, Katy Gallagher has promised Canberrans that she will improve the ACT’s health system, and for the past seven years we continue to see our emergency department waiting times getting worse.

UPDATE 14 May 2013 11:25: A day late ACT Health have finally published the data.

What’s Your opinion?

Interesting stuff.
Highlights included:
1) That we currently have 9.59 sub-accute beds (p. 8)?
2) The creative use of scale on figures (such as the fist graph, p. 10) to ‘show a story’. At a glance, it looks like a doubling in two years, but is in fact only an increase of ~4%. Lies, damn lies, and statistics? 🙂
3) The increase in cardiology waiting times in the last two years (p.11) which is apparently due to a shortage in allied health cardiac staff and/or an increase in pts. You’d think someone may have looked into this by now – and not just to explain *why* it has increased, but to (attempt to) fix it?!

Funny how bad things can look if no one’s fudging the figures…………………..oh look, how cute – a balloon that looks like a whale………

Yeah, they couldn’t find any unicorns this time.

Aren’t they building an extension to the Emergency bit right now?
Seems a bit odd to carry on complaining about the same thing when they can see the extra capacity being built. I don’t think it’s finished so where do they expect patients to be seen…on the oval?
