Simon Corbell has announced that Barack Obama’s third time lucky whistlestop tour of Canberra is going to take in the War Memorial:
Attorney-General, Simon Corbell, today announced enhanced security powers for the upcoming visit of the President of the United States of America, Barack Obama, to the Australian War Memorial in the ACT.
Mr Corbell said the ACT Government had made a declaration under the Major Events Security Act 2000 to assist ACT Policing to ensure the safety and security of the US President, the US Delegation and members of the public.
“This declaration enhances our capacity to ensure appropriate security measures are in place for this leg of the President’s Australian visit,” Mr Corbell said.
President Obama will be in Canberra on 16-17 November 2011 at the invitation of Australian Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, in connection with the 60th anniversary of the ANZUS alliance.
“The declaration will provide ACT Policing with the ability to establish a major event zone around the Australian War Memorial,” Mr Corbell said.
The zone will be in place from 6am to 12pm on 17 November.
