Simon Corbell has announced that Barack Obama’s third time lucky whistlestop tour of Canberra is going to take in the War Memorial:

Attorney-General, Simon Corbell, today announced enhanced security powers for the upcoming visit of the President of the United States of America, Barack Obama, to the Australian War Memorial in the ACT.

Mr Corbell said the ACT Government had made a declaration under the Major Events Security Act 2000 to assist ACT Policing to ensure the safety and security of the US President, the US Delegation and members of the public.

“This declaration enhances our capacity to ensure appropriate security measures are in place for this leg of the President’s Australian visit,” Mr Corbell said.

President Obama will be in Canberra on 16-17 November 2011 at the invitation of Australian Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, in connection with the 60th anniversary of the ANZUS alliance.

“The declaration will provide ACT Policing with the ability to establish a major event zone around the Australian War Memorial,” Mr Corbell said.

The zone will be in place from 6am to 12pm on 17 November.

We were out at the airport when George Bush the first arrived; news years day 90, or 91. Anyway we waited at the corner of Majura road and whatever, as it was thought he would take the back gate out of the airport, and he did. We were parked at the corner of Majura and whatever; traffic lights there now, and as his mighty huge limo slowed down to do a righty, we had a hell of a surprise. Ole George had a loudspeaker in this thing, and he gave us all a ” happy nooo year” greeting. The crowd loved it. Hell it was a nice lookin car.

None. Normally you’d have to book tickets weeks in advance anyway. On this occasion, the whole building is closed down for the day. VIPs only… hence JB may have a couple of tickets?

I would love it if the dude with the octo-copter could get it up for some footage of the president. The part where the SS shoot it down would be especially cool.

So do we have to put up with the Air Force (theirs or ours?) jets roaring above us 24 hours a day again?

Boo Hoo Hoo. The leader of the free world is coming to Australia for the first time as President, and you’re worried about the noise generated by some extremely cool planes?

You’d better not drive down the park way during peak hour – it might hurt your precious ears.

Canberrans really are sooks.

No word about Chuggers being restricted under the special powers. Was hoping they would implement some special no chugger zone to compliment the no fly zone, say 300kms with a provision allowing the Secret Service to unload a Dillon Mini on them should they persist.

Does anyone have any sort of idea of Obama’s timing? More to the point will getting into \ from work next Wednesday \ Thursday be a major headache?

Not enough fuel or servicable aircraft in the RAAF for that so how’s about the RAAF balloon? It is after all, a Canberra local!

Corbell stated on 666 this morning that “George W Bush didn’t go to the War Memorial” as a reason for the different security arrangements this time around. How badly briefed is this Corbell guy? George W Bush DID attend the War Memorial on his visit – there was a small crowd near the Hellenic Memorial (as close as they could get). Get your facts right, Corbell, and don’t pretend that there’s a security need now that didn’t exist for the last POTUS visit.
As for the “no offending placards” rule also mentioned on 666 this morning – I hope the US press gets hold of Corbell’s account of the ACT’s approach to freedom of speech.

Cool, how close do you think people can get the pedal-boats?

To the war memorial? Not particularly close, unless you bring one up and put it in the pool in the foyer.
