Hold up Canberra, we’ve just found the best job in the world: cheese expert. If you’d like to find out what it takes to be a cheese expert, then there’s nobody better to consult than Sam Studd, who comes from a family of cheese experts!
He’ll be participating in an exclusive evening event as part of the Oozy Boozy cheese and wine festival happening over the June long weekend at the Dairy Road Vault. The festival – run in collaboration with local cheese experts Le Cheeserie – will feature a rotating cast of local wines and international cheeses.
It’s just one of a long list of exciting events that local company Dionysus is putting on at The Vault this winter.
“We have run Dairy Road, Cellar Door for a number of years now and we wanted to add to that unique wine experience. We’ve scoured the national cheese market, and there’s nothing quite like this combination of cheese and wine in Canberra,” said Dave Caffery, curator and founder of Dionysus.
Le Cheeserie – which runs a shop at the Capital Food Markets – is bringing a selection of its finest, most unusual and delicious cheeses to the event alongside other cheesemongers and makers. There will be melted raclette, salami and kraut on freshly baked buns, as well as burrata blue cheese cones, caviar, and a variety of delicious condiments.
“Our primary goal in opening Le Cheeserie was to make cheese more accessible. It’s perfectly fine to love cheese without knowing exactly what you prefer. This event is an extension of that philosophy. If customers discover and try new cheeses, find a new favourite, or even expand their cheese-related vocabulary, it would be an excellent outcome for us,” Alex, co-founder of Le Cheeserie told Region.
The headline act of the weekend is cheese expert Sam Studd. The Studd family joke is that ‘their veins run with brie instead of blood’ and Sam grew up learning about cheese from father Will, a cheese expert in his own right. Sam is an ACS Certified Cheese Professional (CCPS) and is a member of the International Guilde Des Fromagers.
He and sister Ellie have released a book called The Best Things in Life Are Cheese, and they work alongside their father to curate a selection of international cheeses for purchase online, as well as running education events and workshops.
At this ticketed headline event, participants will learn about cheese and wine pairing from Sam, with plenty of chances to taste and sip the night away. If you’ve ever wanted to know how to appreciate cheese like a professional – while luxuriating by a fireplace – then this is the event for you.
Tickets to Oozy Boozy include an Italian stemless wine glass, a cheese board and samples of local wines and international cheeses. There will also be wines and cheeses available for take-home purchase.
