“Opera by Candlelight” – Don’t miss out !

Stage 88 Commonwealth Park

On Sunday February 8, 2009 you can enjoy your favourite opera tunes superbly performed in the idyllic setting of Stage 88 in Commonwealth Park. This event is presented in association with our community partners: The Canberra Times, The University of Canberra and the MS Society and hosted by Virginia Hausseger.

The producer Carl Rafferty enjoys the challenge of assembling fine singers and instrumentalists from Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra. Carl’s friend and colleague Warwick Dunham has come from engagements in Japan to rehearse and conduct this ensemble.

The naturally contoured amphitheatre at Stage 88 offers a sheltered area where wind and traffic noise are reduced, and the big stage itself allows you to fully appreciate fabulous lighting and sets.As well as fine singing there will be an instrumental highlight: the astonishing violin virtuoso Alison Laurens will dazzle you with Gypsy and opera tunes.

The programme will include excerpts from “Carmen” and “The Pirates of Penzance”; you’ll enjoy a swag of the greatest hits of Mozart and Verdi. A highlight will be the incredible Mad Scene from Donizetti’s “Lucia di Lammermoor”.
