The next time your local hardware store has a ‘how to lay pavers’ day, attend, stay behind and ask really dumb questions and if you’re lucky, the demonstrator will offer to do a quote for you.

If the job requires a “professional” retaining wall then I assume this means it is high enough to need DA? If so then I’d consider $5000 to be a very reasonable price for the wall and paving if materials are included.

I’d be pretty surprised if you could get anythoing done for less than $5000 in Canberra – it seems like that’s the default amount for just about any sort of job.

Having said that, we’ve had the people at Bruceworks in Pialligo do landscaping for us before and they did a bloody good job an were reasonably priced – also you know exactly what you’re paying for and if anything changes they let you know and talk you through the additional (or in some cases lower)costs.

A few years ago I got Jim’s Paving to do a relatively small area in my backyard. I was very happy with it and the price was quite reasonable (must have been because I now can’t remember what it was).

I’m not sure if it would be the same guys now, though.

Ok ok, it was 5K or $5,000 – got excited and combined the two 🙂

$5,000,000 seems a bit expensive to me as well!
