RSPCA ACT is making it easier to adopt a pet this Christmas, dropping its prices for the holiday period, right up to New Year.

It’s a time for celebration, but for the animals in care at RSPCA ACT it can be a hard time so the organisation has cut its adoption price to only $149, and that includes adoption, desexing, worming, microchipping, vaccinations and a free starter kit including a 3kg bag of food, collar and tag.

RSPCA ACT CEO Michelle Robertson believes summer holidays shouldn’t be ruled out as a time to adopt a dog or cat.

“Despite what many people may believe, summer holidays and Christmas are a great time to add a fur-member to your family. Most people are on holidays so it gives the family plenty of time to bond with their new addition,” she said.

She said RSPCA ACT was often asked about animals being surrendered to the Weston shelter after being unwanted gifts but this actually happened very rarely.

“Pets are a wonderful addition to our lives but if you are contemplating adopting a pet as a gift, please make sure the person who is receiving it actually wants a pet. As much as you’d appreciate it, not everyone has the desire or ability to have one,” she said.

The RSPCA recommends having the person be part of the adoption process to ensure the animal is the right fit for their lives.

“The important thing to remember is: It’s okay to give them a pet as a gift – but never as a surprise!” Ms Robertson said.

“A pet is for life so if you are looking to adopt please ensure that you’re committed to caring for a pet for their entire lives. Please ensure you’re financially, emotionally and physically up for the responsibility.”

The offer is from 2231 December 2018, and all processes and checks for adoptions will remain the same to ensure all animals are homed with the right families.

The RSPCA shelter is at 12 Kirkpatrick St, Weston. All animals available for adoption can be viewed at www.adoptapet.com.au
