It’s been a big week in the public service and the Hoot podcast is here to digest and analyse with Genevieve Jacobs and David Murtagh.
We start with Mike Pezzullo and his seeming fall from grace as it’s revealed that the (currently stood down) Home Affairs Department Secretary was in regular contact with a senior Liberal powerbroker (who knew they still existed?) on matters allegedly a long way removed from the standard of “frank and fearless” independent advice.
Listen on other platforms:
Is that a surprise? And if it’s not all that shocking to twitch aside the curtain and see what’s really going on behind the scenes, does that make it right? Murtagh reckons it’s time we stopped clutching our pearls and realised this is how the sausage is made (to mix a metaphor or two). Could he be the only person in the country defending Pezzullo?
Changes of government are less complicated for ACT public servants, mostly because there are none.
But as the longest stretch in power for Labor anywhere in the country rolls on, and there’s no sign of resurgence from the Opposition, could a return to independents be the answer? Genevieve reckons they might be the shot in the arm ACT democracy needs.
And as the Voice referendum approaches, whose voices are we hearing – and whose are absent? Dave and Genevieve have profoundly differing opinions (as they do on most things), and one is going to be very wrong.
And if you’re still undecided about how you’ll be casting your vote on 14 October, check out Region’s Voice debate.
