Canberra’s pop-up food craze shows no signs of slowing down, with pop-up street food area The Slab opening at the Old Bus Depot Markets this weekend.
From the Old Bus Depot Markets media team:
Canberra’s favourite Sunday markets, the Old Bus Depot markets, will this weekend launch their brand new pop up street food area, The Slab.
“We’re expanding the fabulous offering at the Old Bus Depot Markets and will spill outside to a sun drenched area that has a real history,” said Old Bus Depot Markets’ Director, Diane Hinds.
“This brand new area will be called The Slab and will be home to rotating pop up street food stalls all located on the large concrete slab just outside the markets.
“We’ll kick off this weekend with gourmet German sausages from The Brathaus, handmade Parisian toasted sandwiches from Get Lucky, and we’re so excited to say that Mork’s will also be having their own pop up street food,” Diane continued.
Diane went on to explain that the new food area will complement the markets’ existing food offerings, and that they have been very selective to make sure they get the mix right.
“The markets has for many years had great street food in that, although indoors, the food is the street food concept and is already a big favorite Sunday destination at lunchtime.
“As we always say, the market “tilts” towards the food during the lunch period. The Slab will complement the current flavours from Laos, Ethiopia, Spain, Mexico, France,” said Diane.
Diane explained that The Slab came about because the former Walter Burley Griffin Antique Centre was demolished in order to allow the future development of a local road.
“The ACT government has thoughtfully left the large concrete slab at the back of the building, towards the sun and the lakeside, and we have watched visitors flock to this area to enjoy lunch or a coffee. It’s the perfect area to gather more food offerings and introduce Canberrans to some great new eats.
“The Slab area has a historic past as being part of the Kingston Foreshore, and is our latest step to help define the arts precinct of Kingston,” Diane concluded.
The Slab will present delicious new food from this coming Sunday, Sunday 13 September. The area will be defined in the short term by food stalls, metal screens and tables.
The markets are open 10am to 4pm on Sundays. Entry is free. For more information on the Old Bus Depot Markets go to www.obdm.com.au
