Pratt calls for tenders on policing. And why not?

AAP, via Yahoo, have a story in which Liberal Police spokesperson Steve “more cops” Pratt asks:

Why not ask the AFP and the NSW and Victorian police forces to tender to provide a service of 725 uniformed, sworn police officers for community policing frontline duties, and see who can bloody well provide?

The police association has an answer, but not to the question asked.

ACT community policing provided AFP officers with essential experience.

Without it they could not perform international policing duties such as those under way in the Solomon Islands.

Hmm, that’s a reason why the AFP should be giving the ACT a discount on providing the service, not the other way around.

UPDATED: The Canberra Times also has the story.

royal png constabulary.

flashsuits on – warries to be told.

perhaps i better not…

Id like to know what RPNGC stands for

well, the C anyway, and agee with widening the tender – no-one messes with Islanders – perhaps we could also have an ACT prison on Naru – I believe there is an underutilised facility there…

I’d like to see a tender from the RPNGC.

Since when did this community volunteer to bear all the training costs for overseas deployments?

I’ve never quite understood why the ACT does not have its own Police. In many countries, eg USA, each city has its own force. Leaving aside the odd incidents that are highlighted in the news and other media, one would assume that this model works satisfactorily.

If there are good reasons why the ACT doesn’t have its own force, then we should determine the best alternative and… My God!!! I think at last I agree with something that Pratt has said.

There must be a flaw in the logic somewhere, but for the life of me, I can’t see what it is.

The national average for Police was 292 per 100,000 people. If Steve is only asking for 725 he’s going to leave the ACT even shorter than they are already.

As for the international Policing duties, following that they return to the ACT and have that extra experience that State Police are unable to obtain.

All he really seems to be asking for is a potential change in management. If the funding is not provided by the ACT Government for the extra numbers of frontline Police which ever service is running the show is not going to have those numbers to provide.

Its easy – Want more Police – fund for more Police and put it in the contract how many you want.
