A prisoner allegedly held another prisoner hostage at knifepoint at the Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC) over the weekend, sparking a lockdown at the prison.
The man was armed with a shiv – a makeshift prison knife – but no one was injured during the two-and-a-half-hour incident on Saturday (27 March), a Justice and Community Services Directorate spokesperson said.
Region Media understands a prisoner held the shiv to the other prisoner’s throat and guards threatened to use tear gas before the incident de-escalated.
The hostage was a prisoner on remand at the time of the alleged incident.
The spokesperson said that “corrections officers acted quickly and professionally to resolve the incident”.
It is not clear what sparked the episode.
Region Media understands the same man allegedly cut another prisoner’s head with a shiv and threatened guards in October last year.
