Radar love (lost)

At the BOM radar site, all is not well

Any keen weather watcher, like me, will be bemoaning the loss of the Captains Flat* radar. It would have to go down now, just when we are actually GETTING some weather for a change.

All I’m getting at the website is;

http://mirror.bom.gov.au/products/IDR403.loop.shtml#skip

    Latest Image
    Radar Equipment Failure 11-04-2009
    Start time: Unknown
    Duration: Unknown hours

Although if you are desperate you can go to the Sydney 256 loop, and watch that. Though somehow it’s not the same…

*”Captain’s Flat what” I often wonder…

Umm I may be late but it is working for me.

Still one has to keep up standards, even if onlt by proxy!

Not these days PB. You must’ve been away from the UK for too long. Things have changed there and not for the better.

One is either born British, or one is not British sir!

My cat goes and sits in the rain….

Then again he is a british shorthair…

I just stand in the rain and enjoy it. does that make me a british idiot?

Ah, rain on the sensor, yes, that would explain it.

It’s not used to rain. Like my dog. He was born in Yass in 06 and gets very upset at rain. It is not meant to be there.

I suspect that the BOM is not funded quite enough these days to do maintenance and stuff, and when your funding is chopped by federal politicians, I guess the first facility you might want to let go on the fritz is the radar servicing them and their departments. Just sayin’.

I think rain causes it to lose the plot. After so long without rain the software thinks there must be some kind of error and crashes.

Yay!

Note from the page:
Please note that images from Canberra radar are currently unavailable. The expected restoration of the service is on the afternoon of Wednesday, 15th of April. Any inconvenience is regretted.

Has anyone contacted BoM to see wtf is going on?

None of them picked up the pouring rain that just went through Weston Creek/Woden Valley/Tuggeranong Valley. Kambah had like .2mm

I think that weatherzone, who also supply the images for the Country Energy site, get their radar data from the Bureau of Meteorology anyway. They just change the colour of the rain.

So that Country Energy one above is a composite image of all the radars in NSW. The Captains Flat one will still be down so any rain around here won’t be as detailed as it’ll still be data from the Sydney and Wagga radars.

I either follow the Country Energy Radar or Foxtel weather. The funny thing rhttp://www.weatherzone.com.au there radar for Canberra on Saturday was 24 hours behind.

The Captain’s Flat radar never used to be there anyway… always use to check Wagga 256km radar before CF came online.

You said :

I know of a pretty good solution.

Go outside and look up.

I don’t even need to go outside, thanks to my new bathroom exhaust fan! Whenever there’s precipitation about it very reliably deposits a sample on my bathroom floor 🙂

I miss the radar too. Thanks for the link deye.

Or you can use the 512km composite image and get them both in the one shot.

The same from the Wagga Wagga radar

I miss the radar 🙁

Thanks for that link deye, most useful.

Didn’t know about that one deye – thanks for the link! 🙂

You. Where do we get your 128 and 256km vision. Would save me looking it up.

If I look up all I see is what is directly above me

Maybe we could all go outside, hold up a rag in the matching radar color and wait for MODIS to make a pass and take a few happy snaps.. 🙂

I know of a pretty good solution.

Go outside and look up.

i noticed an error (severe timelag – maybe 12 hours) when i went to look the other day, i think it was friday. and yes, i did feel distressed too 🙁

I would have liked to see the radar from Sat night. Lanyon valley copped a hammering. Wagga radar can also be quite useful for westerly activity heading this way.
