As homeowners demand increasingly high levels of service from their real estate agents, the best in the industry are playing the long game and focusing on building client relationships.

Independent Property Group Woden and Weston Creek’s Jonathan Charles is one such agent. The winner of the REIACT 2014 Residential Salesperson of the Year Award says patience and integrity are key to success in today’s customer-oriented market.

“Canberra is home to some of the best real estate agents in the country, and the accolades prove that. If you watch those agents, they’re patient and focused on the long term. It’s not about the quick dollar,” he says.

“When I first started I wanted to be the best that I could and pushed myself a little too hard. Two or three years after that I decided that it was going to be a slow race, and if I did the right things every day, results would follow.”

The results certainly did follow. Since beginning his real estate career six years ago, the 37-year-old has been named Independent’s 2008 Rookie of the Year, listed as a finalist in the REIACT 2009 Newcomer of the Year category and awarded Independent’s 2013 Role Model of the Year Award.

Jonathan says he owes this success to a strong and loyal network of clients.

“I’m extremely fortunate to have great clients who allow me to work with them and enable me to do well,” he says.

In a competitive market where homeowners have plenty of agents to choose from, Jonathan differentiates himself by offering a unique services package that includes administrative and maintenance assistants.

“We take over the whole process for the client, whether that’s preparing the gardens, getting things rectified or getting trades. The homes are better presented and sell in less time gaining higher prices, so it’s a win-win.” He says.

“The relationship that you build with your clients is much stronger if you can show that you’ve given them an excellent return on their investment in using our team.”

He says that choosing Independent to sell your home means working with an agent who is committed to helping you succeed.

“Being part of a large company like IPG has given me the support from all aspects of the real estate industry to help me deliver a premium and unique service for our most important employer, our clients.”

Jonathan isn’t the only Independent team member to be recognised this year. At the 2014 REIACT Awards, Independent’s Hannah Gill won Property Manager of the Year, Josephine Jankovic took out the Corporate Support Award, Renee Bink won the Achievement Award and Mark Larmer was awarded Auctioneer of the Year.

Independent also won the Communications and Large Agency of the Year awards, which is the first time that a single agency has won all of these major awards in a single year.
