Remand Centre Riot!

The Canberra Times is very excited by a riot in the remand centre.

“Prison officers were punched in the head and face during a riot at the Belconnen Remand Centre.
Six of the officers were treated at the Canberra Hospital for injuries suffered during the wild brawl in the centre’s F Yard accommodation block on Monday.

Nine inmates were involved in the incident, two of whom were injured.

Corrections Minister John Hargreaves declined to comment on the incident.”

This would be the same remand centre where we’ve been hearing about over-crowding for months now?

The one where they’re stacking up the inmates because of a massively delayed prison opening?

And is this the same Corrections Minister so very keen on Westminster traditions that he publicy rebuked a magistrate for daring to air opinions about other areas of incompetence in his administration?

Surely he would have something to say? Perhaps a resignation to offer?

Well, he did put out a media release on the fluffy puppies he’ll use in the prison if it ever opens.

PS – I loved the John Hargreaves quote about the riot at the remand centre – he said it was a little dust up such as you might get in a catholic seminary…. perhaps the journo got to him after lunch.

He will get the time served at Belconnen taken off his sentence. At this rate his entire 5.5 yr sentence will be served out at the remand centre. No wonder the place is packed to the rafters if people are staying there for years rather than go to Goulburn.

I have actually decided I am in favour of the new prison being so large. It is better to do something properly first up, rather than bitsy little efforts (like 5 new mental health beds).

The Canberra Times has a follow up story.

The fact that someone has been in there 5 years is interesting. What’s curious to me, if I’m reading it correctly, is that this guy has ‘served’ 5 years in there, but his real sentence won’t start until he gets into the AMC. Something seems a little screwy there.

who knows – he’ll probably get time served taken off the overall sentence

There’s nothing wrong with being self-indulgent – for a change. 🙂

Sorry – I’ll go sit in the corner for a while.

You’re all totally offtopic.

Stop being so self-indulgent.

Thoughtful response there Evil.

Don’t shoot at a well armed country from schools and hospitals… not only does it violate numerous treaties and conventions you place your own citizens at a very high risk.

Yes, that is a good response isn’t. By you logic, next time my neighbour has a loud party I will be well within my rights to drive my car through their lounge room to make them stop – too bad if I kill a few innocent people on the way!

And of course, nothing of what Israel has done violates any international laws, treaties or conventions, does it???

Target the extremists – not the general population.

Yeah DJ – whatever!

Idiot. Have a look at what you wrote and then check your history. Oh, you were trying to be funny? You failed.

unfortunately only a matter of time and it had to happen – overcrowding, heat, total boredom all adds up to trouble.

Hey, that’s not a fair comment!

The prison opening has been delayed because the plumbers have had some trouble with getting the water temperature just right for the jacuzzis – and it wouldn’t be fair allowing prisoners into the place without fully functioning jacuzzis.

Plus the UN would no doubt be very cross with the ACT Govt if it allowed prisoners to use a faulty jacuzzi, as it infringes human rights to do so.

Having gone off at half cock earlier this week, he’s now apparently heeding the old addage that there are times when it’s better to keep one’s gob shut, thus allowing only speculation about one’s narcissism, stupidity and low intellect; rather than open it with brain not engaged, and dispel any doubts.

he is liaising with NSW correctional services for advice and assistance with the K-9 Unit??

why not with the AFP? or customs? or at a stretch, the RAAF? all have K-9 units here….

I thought it was funny that he used the media to tell of the magistrate – he was telling him off for making critical comments to the media.
