Smoke from 'hot works' cause building evacuation in Canberra's centre

UPDATE 11.25 am: Firefighters have confirmed the source of smoke at a building on Alinga Street is from work crews on the roof.

‘Hot works’ were taking place on the roof of the building when an automatic fire alarm alerted authorities.

Firefighters have now left the scene and Alinga Street has reopened.

10:45 am: ACT Fire and Rescue crews are on scene at a building on Northbourne Avenue and Alinga Street in Canberra City, following reports of smoke inside.

Firefighters were originally called to an automatic fire alarm at the building, however, they were told occupants could smell smoke.

Crews are investigating all levels within the building to determine the source and location of the fire.

As a precaution, the building is being evacuated.

One lane of Alinga Street is currently closed near the bus interchange. Northbourne Avenue is currently not affected.

People are being advised to avoid the area.
