Starting a Trichotillomania Support Group

By Kayor 21 June 2011 17

Hi, I’m trying to start a support group for sufferers of Trichotillomania. I know there used to be one that ran once a month in Civic but it didn’t last long, I think.

If you know anyone who suffers or if you are a sufferer yourself, I’d be keen to hear from you.

Here is a link to an Awareness Event on Facebook.

And to the group I’ve started, also on Facebook.

What’s Your opinion?

Thanks Keijidosha, you support was very needed. It’s not a funny illness, I get mocked all the time. I used to have beautiful eyelashes and eyebrows and now I struggle with an illness where neither drugs nor hypnotherapy has helped and no one understands the reason I do it.
It’s hard to see you all joke because of how people treat me, particularly ex partners, colleagues and supposed friends.
Classified; my doctor psychologist and I are trying to restart a support group, please look at the Facebook links if you have access to it.

Hi Kayor – I cannot imagine the degree of impact that this illness would have on someone. While these ‘jokes’ were general, they were not meant as a personal issue towards you obviously. Sometimes a light-hearted approach is the path people take when in fact the subject matter can be difficult to discuss.

Anyway, I hope that you get all the support and assistance that you and the other sufferers need for this illness. And if your partners left you because of it – then it’s their loss!!

Good luck.

I’ve been tearing my hair out trying to find this kind of support.

Thanks for that Frots.

Everyone should consider that it isn’t just those who suffer from these types of conditions that are affected. Imagine being the parent of a small child who has a rare condition such as this – it’d be nice to find other people in the same situation who might help to ease your burden.

I do understand also and do apologise if I caused any offence. I am just of the opinion that making light hearted of any situation can never cause harm. I really do not see anything in this post that was intended to inflict pain but instead only laughter. The OP has had the intention of bringing attention to their cause and in that they have achieved their goal. It is a sad situation when you are no longer able to laugh at yourself.

+1 Agree. I hope that you get the support you need Kayor – and we do apologise for any offence given. I am sure that the guys, as I do, wish you and the group all the best.

Bravo, people. Bravo. Your ability to mock someone seeking to help others is admirable.

You are right – and all jokes aside I am sure that we did not mean to offend anyone by this. If we did, then please accept our apologies for it.

This type of illness is very difficult for any sufferer so my thoughts are with them.

Sorry, sorry won’t do it again, not by the hair of my chinny chin chin.

I’d hate to be the cleaner after that meeting.

Sort of makes you scratch your head in wonder doesn’t it? (Sorry to all – no offence meant but I couldn’t help it! Anyway, blame Conan!).
