The National Gallery has announced that Gungahlin College’s Taylor Singh and Grammar’s Nicholas Perillo are the local winners of the 2012 National Summer Art Scholarships:

This national art scholarship brings sixteen year 11 students from every state and territory to Canberra for a week of workshops, tours and discussion based on works of art in the Gallery’s collection and the current major summer exhibition, Renaissance.

The 2012 National Summer Art Scholarship attracted over 400 applications from remote, regional and metropolitan Australia. The variety and high quality of applications demonstrates the strength and interest from secondary school students for the visual arts in Australia.

Announcing the names of the 2012 National Summer Art Scholars, Ron Radford, AM, Director of the National Gallery of Australia said “the Summer Art Scholarship program has been established for fifteen years and we are always impressed with the quality of art being produced by Australia’s young people. I look forward to welcoming the winners to the National Gallery of Australia”.

The 2012 Art Scholars students arrived in Canberra on Saturday 14 January and spend this week taking part in creative workshops with artists, undergo mentoring with the Gallery’s professional staff and see behind the scenes workings of the National Gallery of Australia, creating a unique insight into the many career opportunities that art galleries and museums can offer.
