Since opening in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the Kingston Foreshore, 38 Espresso has become a local favourite. This charming coffee bar’s prime waterfront location makes it the ideal spot to catch up with friends, enjoy some good food, and indulge in some people-watching while overlooking the picturesque foreshore.

Exactly the type of view and atmosphere that is perfect for some good old fish and chips. That is exactly what owners Ryan and Nick Jennings thought when they launched and opened ‘That Fish and Chip Place’ – a warm weather weekend dinner spot moonlighting in 38 Espresso premises.

Owner Ryan Jennings said, “I used to manage construction laboratories in Canberra and NSW for a large multinational company for nearly 10 years before my brother Nick and I opened 38 Espresso 5 years ago as an espresso bar.”

“In 2015 we did a major renovation and added a working kitchen which gave the ability to do something a bit different. As a part of that, Nick, our chef Tom and I came up with the idea to do a fish and chip shop as there wasn’t anything like what I grew up with – to get simple, but tasty, fish in the area. So we thought we would give it a go.”

They have been operating ‘That Fish and Chip Place’ throughout summer and making the most of Canberra’s extended seasonal sunshine every Friday and Saturday night. They shut the doors of 38 Espresso and serve fish and chips through the window. Only the outdoor seating area is open for it, but you can BYO drinks and enjoy a classic summer dinner alfresco by the lake.

“Our motto for That Fish and Chip Place, similar to 38 Espresso, is “Good food, no shortcuts,” and, “simple and fresh food with a good view and great company” continued Ryan.

The menu is simple but still packed with options, including fresh grilled fish or prawns served with a choice of sauces, salad and chips or salt and pepper calamari, soft tacos served with either fish, chicken, pork or veggies, Mediterranean salad, corn on the cob and soft drinks.

Ryan said his favourite way to eat fish is “Grilled as we serve it. Otherwise freshly battered and cooked like The Boat Shed at Batemans Bay.”

Hurry to get your fill of waterfront views and tasty seafood as they will only be opening That Fish and Chip Place until the end of March!

Will have to give this a crack. The Nutters enjoy a good round of fish n chips which is sadly hard to come by in Canberra. The chippos we’ve tried in Gungahlin sell that bloody awful Basa (from the Catfish family) and slug you for it.
