That staple of the club menu, the seafood basket. Any decent ones out there?

By farnarkler - 15 March 2011 8

I’ve plucked up enough courage to admit yes I like a good seafood basket.

Trouble is I keep looking for that Shangri La of seafood baskets which probably doesn’t exist.

Has anyone had one lately worthy of praising it here??

What’s Your opinion?

Hot tempura flathead, crispy prawns, salt & pepper squid. chilled bugs, fresh crab, fresh prawns &
natural oysters served w chips, mixed green salad and sauces

Seafood Tower (presented on a 3 tiered stand) $150
Our famous tower offering market fresh, cold, grilled and hot tempura seafood. including moreton bay bugs, 1/2 lobster mornay, fresh whole prawns, grilled and natural coffin bay oysters, ½ shell hervey bay scallops, house cured tasmanian ocean trout. accompanied with chips, mixed green salad and sauces

Sounds good, but hardly club food.

I’ve been there twice. Both times crap service, OK food but expensive price. No thanks.

magpies at kippax have an ok one…….they also do a seafood platter for 23 bucks that is huge and includes a dozen oysters in even amounts of mornay, kilpatrick and natural

I had one at the Southern Cross club on the weekend, and it was really nice. Pretty simple (two bits of beer battered flathead, 8-10 calamari rings and a couple of large prawn cutlets), but nicely cooked and tasty. 20 bucks, though, which to me is a fair bit to pay for a club meal.

Bernie’s from the Bay, in Charnwood shops, do a very tasty one in which we like to partake on a semi-regular basis. It’s a “basket for two”, though, so unless you’re a huge eater you’ll want to share it.
