This just in:

Canberra painter, drawer and sculptor, Steve Roper is topping off a huge 2012 with an exhibition of painting and sculpture at The Front Gallery and Café.

That’s You In The Corner! is a set of bright and quirky paintings and sculptures–incredibly engaging for the stories they tell and the glimpse they give of the artist’s mind.
Roper’s works convey themes of music, relationships, disconnection, selfabsorption and egotism. And the cartoonlike characters he creates through painting and sculpture tell these stories with their own unique voices.

“These works reflect my longstanding interest in colour and line. Lately I have started to bring tonal qualities into my work, reflecting my respect for a lot of great tonal artists,” he says.
As well as respect, this exhibition is also inspired by economy.

“One of the reasons I have pursued a cartoonlike style is the energy efficiency and materials saving inherent in cartooning. For example the average cartoon hand has three fingers, not four.”

That’s You In The Corner! will be officially opened at 6pm on Thursday 8 November 2012 when all will be welcome to take in the work and meet the artist.

See the free exhibition at The Front Gallery and Café, 2 Wattle Street, Lyneham, ACT.
