Lake George with water[Photo by Holden Caulfield]

The Canberra times reports that Lake George finally has some water.

Now, I am stuck out of town and won’t get to see it (if it doesn’t last a while). So a request to all, if you are out that way, would you mind posting a few shots here?

There’s water in some of the ACT lakes too, but it’s really icky, you wouldn’t want to celebrate it. Maybe they should give LBG the George treatment, completely drain it and then let it refill and see if it looks nicer the second time around?

I just stumbled across this old article from the SMH, published in November 2002. Supposedly that’s when the lake first went completely dry in the recent drought.

http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2002/11/29/1038386313869.html

The article states it is/was the first time since the 1940s the lake was bone dry.

Good to see… I have fond memories of driving to Canberra in 1993/94 pas the lake – and it was right up to the (old) road. Seems like its been a sheep paddock for so long now.

That last photo with the clouds is great, Holden! Where did you take that from?

Marked Tree Road – take the Collector/Gunning exit off the Federal Highway.

Good to see water in there again. I can remember seeing it so full of water that the water lapped right up to the Federal Highway – but that was in 1980.

It was really full in the early 1990s, and empty by the end of the decade.

I used to have to drive past most days for work. The lake looked its best when a full moon was rising on a clear, still night.

Nice to see, but from these pics (haven’t been out there lately) it looks like a simialr amount of water to what was there about 2005(?). Would be great to see it full again. Last time I saw that was when I was here as a kid in the late 60s – early 70s.

Although looking again, unless it pours cats and dogs soon it already looks to be quickly drying up?

The difference in the photos that were in the CT report and the ones now posted here are staggering. I don’t think I could’ve seen it that nicely with my own eyes.

It looks bloody brilliant too, hope it does stick around a bit.

Thanks heaps for all who posted pics.

As it happens I snapped some pics today of the water from the top of the escarpment at the Collector end of Lake George. Images on way to JB.

Oh good, Planeguy, I’ll admit to being lazy and mistaking it to mean no pic and not looking 🙂

That’s why I’m not a journo!

i flew over it last weekend, I wondered what lake it was, and then I saw the windmills. It was pretty full. I drove past it on thursday and it was still pretty full (as in you could see the water from the highway)

but sorry, no photos.

There was a pic on the CT site, but that’s just one. I just reckon that the talent of the crew here will give a nice variety.

Journalism is such a lazy game these days, or at least so it seems. You think with the CT report it may’ve included a picture.
😐

I’m stuck in town, would also like to see some pics, especially from some of the very talented photographers around RA if they were in that area.
