Winemakers from across the world have sent their best wines to the capital to be judged (and tasted by the public) for the Canberra International Riesling Challenge.

Get out in the sun and enjoy the final days of Floriade with three diverse events, eat some tasty local food at The Forage or join a special free community dance in Civic.

If you’re looking to sit down and unwind, consider comedian Jennifer Wong’s new stand-up show, connect with the local literary scene at Tuggeranong Arts Centre and much more.

Pilot Paragraphs: Armchair Readings

Connect with the local literary scene and receive feedback on your own work. This Friday, listen to local queer author Emma Batchelor read an excerpt of her work or take an opportunity to share your own and hear your characters come to life in the form of a live reading. This opportunity allows writers to hear how their characters sound and get feedback on how their work is received.

Canberra Hospital Foundation’s (CHF) CAN GIVE DAY is a 24-hour fundraising sprint to support clinical trials and medical research in Canberra, therapeutic and supportive programs, purchase of speciality medical equipment and transformations of away-from-bed areas. This year, CHF is reaching higher than ever before with a goal of $400,000. Can you help them hit the target?

On Friday, St Kilda to St Moritz: Scoring silent home movies brings historic home movies to life with original scores composed by ANU student composers to the NFSA big screen with a Q&A afterwards. Then, on Saturday, screenings of pivotal Australian new wave film Wake in Fright and both volumes of Kill Bill on 35 mm film prints to mark the 20th anniversary of Kill Bill: Volume One.

The Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum

When: Saturday 14 October, 8 am to 6 pm (or vote before referendum day at a pre-polling voting centre)
Where: Various locations, find your nearest polling place at the AEC website
Cost: Free (but you might cop a fine if you don’t vote).

Australia will decide whether to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. Check out the AEC website for voting locations and take some coins and notes to enjoy the greatest example of Australian democracy – the democracy sausage! Canberra’s original street food event is back to celebrate the turn of season with the tastes of spring. Bursting with local food from food trucks and some of the best restaurants and bars, this event will be jam-packed with Canberra’s finest street food, beverages and entertainment. Think giant egg and spoon races, best-dressed dog competitions, sangria and ice cream and much more.

There are many kinds of wine, but this challenge is focused on a single grape variety: riesling – the queen of grapes. Winemakers from across the world have sent their wines to Canberra for judging in the largest riesling-focused events in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the largest in the world. Once the judging is done, it’s your turn to taste the world’s finest drops.

Bring a picnic rug and hamper, but most importantly, bring your dogs to this picnic day, which is all about your four-legged companions. Expect several pet-related market stalls, a range of (human) food options and special dog events and demonstrations throughout the day. Plus, explore the story of the historic Yass Tram Way at the Yass Railway Museum, where the event will be held.

Team Securus Movie Night Fundraiser

Team Securus is hosting a movie night fundraiser at Palace Electric Cinemas for a good cause. Ticket proceeds will go directly to the Cycle Challenge team, which is targeting $15,000 for the 2023 Hartley Cycle Challenge. Hartley is a community organisation helping people with a disability live their best life, and their biggest fundraising event is the annual Hartley Cycle Challenge.
