With a three course meal, a glass of bubbles on arrival for mum, and a gorgeous vineyard view amongst the rolling, lush hills of Wamboin, all a quick hop, skip and a jump from Canberra, Contentious Character is my pick for a lazy Mother’s Day lunch this Sunday.

Being a single vineyard winery, they grow all their own grapes, sell their own wines, and make their own good times. Welcoming guests to join them at the weekends, throwing open the cellar door, firing up the pizza oven and serving fresh local produce, paired with their wines. The good times will be taken up a notch with something extra special planned for Mother’s Day!

The boys, owners Tony Mansfield, Ben Jarrett, Jeremy Wilson and Ross Appleton at Contentious will be pouring their very special, delicious Founders Reserve 2013 Sparkling Pinot Noir Chardonnay for all the Mums as complimentary. This aged Sparkling was only recently brought up from the cellar, finished by disgorging wine according to the traditional méthode champenoise. Only the very best sparkling wines are made by méthode champenoise, which requires a secondary fermentation in the bottle. So it is only fitting that Mum is served up the very best on Mother’s Day. Or if she prefers, a 2010 Sparkling Merlot is on offer as well as the very fruity 2013 Rose.

To eat, the kitchen has prepared a $65 per person three-course menu, with three options per course. The menu not only celebrates the change of season but features popular dishes that Mum and the rest of the family is sure to love.

To whet the appetite, the ‘Nibbles’ course consists of either a rich, luxurious Duck liver pate, house smoked crispy bacon, plum and shiraz jelly or the flavourful Free range pork rillettes, pickled grapes, apple and tarragon. For those seeking a vegetarian option, the tempting Herby mushroom arancini, roasted garlic aioli sounds like a delightful way to start a long lunch.

For the ‘Main Attractions’, the kitchen will be serving some of their most crowd-pleasing dishes, including the favoured Wood fired free range chicken, smashed roots, chicken jus, and the enticing Stuffed free range pork belly, braised fennel, apple jus along with the warming Cauliflower risotto, taleggio, toasted almond picada.

To finish the meal on a sweet note, the ‘Guilty Pleasures’ on offer for the day are a trio of loveable classics, Vanilla pannacotta with green apple sorbet, or a Chocolate fudge brownie with vanilla bean ice cream and a Sticky date pudding with vanilla bean ice cream and butterscotch. For the dairy-loving families, a Cheese Selection of the Day is available for $14 per person.

Bookings on the day are essential and are tight already but there’s still space for early or late sittings available inside the restaurant, and on the beautiful covered deck outdoors. So why not jump on the phone, make your reservation and enjoy the crisp Canberra Autumn air in the vineyards, letting the wine, food, conversation and time spent with family warm up your day? At Contentious Character, there is plenty of room for kids to run around too or play chess by the fire.
