Winter brings with it many things, including foggy mornings, crisp days and The Truffle Festival – Canberra Region. From June through to August, the truffle growers in the Canberra District band together to promote their latest season of black winter truffles at the festival and this year marks the 10 year anniversary of the event.
For me, the word ‘truffle’ has always conjured up images of the French countryside and expensive Michelin starred restaurants. At approximately $2000 per kilogram, it was not an ingredient that I thought was within my budget or my geographic vicinity; that was until I moved to Canberra. With a variety of events ranging from gourmet degustation dinners, café style dishes, brewery collaborations, cooking classes, demonstrations, farmers markets, and truffle hunts during the annual winter Truffle Festival – Canberra Region, the much prized and adored fungi are very much within reach and accessible to everyone.
With more than 250 individual events held across the Canberra region, here are some of our top picks to enjoy truffles this season.

One of the most unique paddock to plate experiences available in the region is going on a truffle hunt – and now is the perfect time to hunt and harvest the little nuggets of black gold.
Tarago Truffles, Turalla Truffles, Macenmist Black Truffles and Wines, and L’Air du Wombat Truffles all offer up this unique experience within a short drive of Canberra.
