A body has been located in the Snowy Mountains during a search for a 23-year-old Canberra man who went back country skiing three days ago and failed to return.
The man was reported missing on Saturday (3 September), after his family contacted police saying it was unlike him not to contact family or friends for such a long period of time.
On Sunday (4 September 2022), a large-scale coordinated aerial and ground search of remote parts of the Kosciuszko National Park began, involving specialist police from the Alpine Operations Unit, PolAir, the State Emergency Service (SES), and National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS).
Police said officers aboard the PolAir helicopter spotted a person in a remote area of Watsons Crags yesterday (5 September) afternoon, however hazardous weather conditions and steep terrain meant it was unable to land.
The operation was suspended for the day, resuming again this morning with with specialist police officers who were trained in alpine rescue.
The officers were then lowered to the ground, where they discovered the body of a man.
The operation to retrieve the body is continuing. While it is yet to be formally identified, it is believed to be the body of the missing 23-year-old skier.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
