Johnboy caught wind of my incredible story of the human spirit triumphing over adversity and asked me to knock something up for you, ever-friendly Rioters. Must be a slow news day.
I’m sure you’ve heard of Triple J Unearthed. Their coveted competitions offer opportunities to upcoming bands, which they divide by state. This results in artists from far-off Bourke ostensibly getting more opportunities to play the big Sydney festivals than artists in Canberra, even though we’re way closer to that den of sin and harbour views.
As a crusader for Territory-equality (read: self-interested jerk), I contacted Triple J Unearthed to highlight this discrepancy – noting that if Jerrabomberra artists are eligible for NSW comps, then Canberra artists probably could be too.
To their great credit, they wrote back to notify me that they’re including ACT bands for future NSW-specific comps, even those that are running now!
The squeaky wheel gets the symbolic guideline amendment towards more equitable distribution of publicly-funded opportunities.
So, now ACT musos can no longer complain about being left behind and must instead turn their gripes into writing better songs.
How terrifying.
