Twins, Twins, Two for the show…

Tonino is a charming swashbuckler from Venice. Zanetto is a humble boy from a small town just outside Bergamo. Both have appointments in Verona involving marriage, revenge, money and a most hiss-able villain. And both happen to be identical twins. Confusion reigns in a fast and furious musical romp set somewhere between Verona and Jindyworoback.

Nick Enright and Terrence Clarke’s musical adaptation of Goldoni’s commedia dell’arte, “I due gemelli veneziani”, is an Australian gem (Carlo Goldoni also wrote “The Servant Of Two Masters”, currently wowing Broadway in adapted form with James Corden as “One Man Two Guvnors”). The score is inspired by everything from Kurt Weill to Grand Opera to “The Road To Gundagai”. This is the first musical that Rep’s produced since 1991’s “The Fantasticks” – another part of the tradition of musical performance in Rep that’s included Old Time Music Hall and Jazz Garters.
