I am currently completing my honours year in the Photography & Media Arts department at the ANU School of Art. For my honours project I am exploring what masculinity is to men in 2012. I have chosen to focus on masculinity as I feel that it is an important and ever changing topic, which encompasses many areas of one’s life and personality, but does not receive enough attention. Therefore I am asking a range of males, including you, one simple question…what is masculinity to you?

I will be using the information provided to create a character and construct photographic images using myself as the subject, which will explore various views and opinions of masculinity.

Someone who doesn’t run for the surface spray when they see a spider lol

Whacking a spider.

You should be brave enough to carry the spider outside! This is one practical thing that even I can do.

Masculinity is a slave to the monster they call testosterone which women both love and hate!

Penny Wong – eew

Being strong enough to “dutch oven” your partner?

How will you know the responses are from men – for an honours level research project? Won’t your supervisors be askin’?

Choking on one of your ladies short and curlies without breaking stride.

(Beers in the shower, hanging towels off your genitals, making hearty grunts when something pleases you and mighty beards that would shame Odin himself.)

Maybe we should also be asking what femininity means.

It would be pretty sad if we could define the difference.

…and mine the minerals used to make the bike frame, and then design it, and construct the bike, and test it, and market it…

It wasn’t in the form of a horrible poem, so it must have been one of her astroturfers, not her.

Honour, honesty, wisdom, courage, courtesy, dignity, thoughtfulness, humour, calmness, strength when required and gentleness at other times.

One or more of those attributes should see a man through most situations.

Not bad. Maybe add accepting responsibility for your actions and working for the common good.

I think masculinity is being able to ignore the superficial facade of “masculinity” that involves being tough, strong, averse to anything slightly effeminate and constantly self-ware, and being true to one’s own self-image while being honest, self-sacrificing, dependable ad courageous (in many different ways). After the facade of being tough and manly is just as pretentious and vain as skinny jeans and hair product. It’s really what you are as a person that counts, in fact being brave enough to be true to yourself while others may ridicule you is much more masculine.

And then there’s this:

What is masculinity: making sure you have ANU Ethics approval before asking for people’s personal details for your research?

masculinity? go get me a beer and i’ll tell you…

an inability to consult a doctor but being a writhing mess when a mild ‘flu symptom appears; a lack of capacity to discuss anything remotely ’emotional’ but crying and hugging your mates when inebriated and telling them, ‘i love you, mate’. and taking the garbage bins out.

bloke up!

I’ll take maturity over masculinity and would look for the same traits in a woman as a man, such as self-control, disregarding shallow judgement, restraint and forethought, a yearning to accrue knowledge and practical skills, and the mastery of them.

Facial hair, saggy balls…

Yeaahhh, well maybe not all the same traits.

Not being a metrosexual pretty boy, who is in touch with his feelings.

Masculinity is being a construction worker, just like the one in Village People…

Masculinity is NOT wearing jeans that look like they belong to your sister.

The more I think about it, the more I realise that the concept of “masculinity” can only really be defined as the possession of a penis and testicles. Anything else is a crock.

Men…Can’t live with them, can’t live without them. Someone has to pump up the bike tyres.
