What’s with the red grass?

red grass

Pommy Bastard has sent this in with a question:

At Aranda bushland this morning walking the dogs, I was taken by the amazing displays of wild flowers there. I was surprised to notice that some of the grass, which is now over five foot high in places, had got in on the act and were in bloom with lovely delicate red and orange flowers. I mentioned this to the mother in law (in the distance a dog howls at the moon) who has lived in Canberra for 40+ years and she says it’s the first time she’s seen it. Anyone else noted it before?

Well my first thought was that they would have to assemble their fighting machine which would take until monday.

But then I realised the red weed means they are already here and perhaps they assembled their fighting machine years ago……..and they called it……….

Thanks for the information Spoono, interesting indeed.

All my Dianellas are flowering like that at the moment, except they are blue and yellow flowers.

Yeah I’ve seen it heaps in the Aranda Bushland in past years. I believe it is Red-anther Wallaby grass (Jocyea pallida). Due to the rains it’s gone crazy this year.
