Where's the best wheel alignment place in Canberra?

Hi all,

After a bit of a search, I came up with nothing, so I thought I’d ask the question:

Can anyone point me to, in their opinion the best wheel alignment place in Canberra. It can be anywhere in Canberra (i’m Gungahlin side). I’m after a place that will accept lease vehicles and that gives me a print out showing before and after.

My CC Passat has experienced 3 wheel alignments over the past year and they’ve not been that great. steering wheel is always off centre.

So far, i’ve used the following places. Jax Tyres in Fyshwick, Fulcrum suspension – Fyshwick and Beaurepairs in Gungahlin. None have been that great. previous experience (with other cars) has been Kmart Auto Deakin, Jax Phillip and Commonwealth Motors Phillip (by far the worst).

Anyone got a place they really rate?

Cheers

MightyJoe

Yeah, too true, but the car does swerve to one side nowadays..

I will try inline then.

A crooked steering wheel doesn’t necessarily mean that your wheel alignment is out.

It could just mean that they couldn’t be bothered aligning the steering wheel in the correct (straight) position before doing the wheel alignment. This usually happens when they get the apprentice to do the alignment.

…I was directed to use discount tyre service (think they have now changed branding) for new tyres and an alignment. The tyres they fitted were not the ones I asked for, instead they were about half again more expensive and the alignment was shoddy…

Their Fyshwick outlet pulled a stunt like that on me for a set of wheels I was buying. Instead they gave me cheaper wheels at the same price they had quoted the ones I asked for.

But, back then, I was too young and dumb to stand my ground. But here we are 20-odd years later and I’m still recommending against them even though they don’t exist anymore, haha. (They’re now branded as Goodyear Autocare outlets.)

I always go to Woden Tyre and Exhaust. They’re very friendly, charges are reasonable (but not cheap) and the printout shows that the realignment is pretty spot on.

I had a terrible experience at Bob Jane in Belconnen. How bad? Try the front wheels almost falling off as the nuts hadnt been tightened. I drove less than 200 feet before I stopped and was absolutely stunned to see what had happened.

You went there for a wheel alignment, so dont whinge about loose nuts…..

It is quite normal to also have the wheels balanced and rotated when you have a wheel alignment, which is done with the wheels removed.

As to this thread in general there will be no one answer, and as we have seen places the OP has had issues with others have had none. I really reckon for the most part it is pot luck.

Though for what it is worth for the past 15 years I have used Transtate/Jax at Belconnen for anything related to tyres, brakes and suspension and never once had an issue.

The exception is one lease car I had, leased through a now defunct ACT government owned company and I was directed to use discount tyre service (think they have now changed branding) for new tyres and an alignment. The tyres they fitted were not the ones I asked for, instead they were about half again more expensive and the alignment was shoddy. When I asked why the fitted the more expensive tyres they said they were better and besides it was a lease car so I wasn’t paying. Bzzt no as lessee I do pay. Suffice to say they left the tyres on and gave them to “me” for the price of the tyres I wanted. The alignment wasn’t good either, pulling to one side so went back for a tweak after a week or so.

Seriously?? It’s just a wheel alignment….

Also, I got a front wheel alignment from Jax Tyres in Fyshwick a few months ago, been fine since.

Just a wheel alignment?? I mean its not like your tyres are the only contact point between the car and the road… Tyres are the most important investment in your car and your safety and its especially important that they’re aligned, not just for tyre wear.

Op – sounds like you want it done properly. Definitely go to Inline, they don’t just say ah well it’s within a few mm, they’ll do it properly.

The parkway did a few wheel alignments thismorning.. Perhaps the quality isn’t there though…

I got one done at the new Tyrepower in Mitchell 6 months ago. The guys seemed really friendly, knew what they were doing and the cars been spot on since. I was having front tyre scrubbing issues and had bent an alloy rim on a big pothole hit. Tyres have now been wearing nice and evenly, car tracks straight, and the steering wheel is straight. I was recommended them by a mate who runs his own mechanical workshop in Mitchell, and I know he doesn’t settle for a half arsed job.

Yes, have done so. but its still not a great alignment, hence asking for who does it better.

Says you… you try driving with a crooked steering wheel. Plus, you do realise that bad alignment chews through tyres… my tyres are approx $300-400 per tyre, so hence the question…

Will have to give Inline a call.

Anyone else?

Which begs the question – why didn’t you take it back and get them to do it again? For as long as I’ve been driving I take the car back if things aren’t fixed properly.

I would recommend Inline Steering & Suspension out in Queanbeyan too

I’ve never had a problem with Beurepairs Phillip. In Parramatta St. I’ve taken my lease car and my other car there many times, this week most recent, and the experience has been good.

I understand wityh the dear tyres, I’ve got expensive one’s on the golf.

Give Scott a call and ask him if he’ll do the printout for you.

I will second Inline Steering and Suspension. I turst them more with my BMW than i do with the dealer service centre…. They do a great job, but its not the cheapest place around.

You could try Inline Steering and Suspension, but they’re in Queanbeyan.
