Hi there hive mind.

An elderly relative has broken her ankle while base jumping in the Arapiles*.

As this happened out of state she has been sent home on crutches.

We feel she would be better off with a walking frame.

So does anyone know where we can hire one in Canberra?

*Ok, not really.

Hey, Ben – I have a lightish weight, fold-up one in the shed – genuine one little old lady owner (sadly no longer has need of it). Yours if you think it might be useful – post back here if you like, and I’ll work out how we get in touch “off line”.

Thanke ever so much for that kind offer, but the mad old bat insists on going somehwere and paying as much as possible for one. (OK, and she insists on getting it fitted to her, as she’s a fair bit taller than most mad old bats..)

She wants to pay “as much as possible” to hire something? How odd!

Sometimes they are at Tiny’s Green Shed or some Salvos or Vinnies stores. The ones at Tiny’s only need a good clean.

If you are a Zimmerman, so is Bob Dylan.

Try your local chemist.
I know the one in Florey has them as well as wheel chairs, nebulisers etc etc for hire.

Pretty sure many chemists offer hire of this kind of equipment.

I believe there is another place in Philip – the same street as the Eco-Cleaners, the Chocolate Olive cafe (if that still exists), the expensive toy shop and the spice shop – sorry just can’t recall the name of it but I know they sell mobility products. If you know these other businesses you’ll find it!

I know the Lyneham Capital Chemist have done a hire service in the past. Have a feeling they do walking frames as part of this too. Might be worth giving them a call.

Hello,

I know this is going to sound strange but try the Green Shed at Mitchell. They have a fine collection of crutches and I am fairly sure that I have seen several of these frames sitting nearby as well. I have found calling them a bit hit and miss for getting them to answer the phone (which makes sense when you go there as the staff are all out and about sorting etc). If you are out the other side of town you can try the equivalent place at Mugga (?). Good luck.

You could try ACT Health’s Equipment Loan Service based in Kambah, but you’ll need a referral.

Some pharmacies hire out mobility equipment. Lyneham Capital Chemist, for instance.

There are chemists that rent frames out– though going through places such as Mobility Matters also mean that the frame will be fitted to suit the users height, which is very important to their recovery.

most Chemists do.
The one at Kambah Village does and so does the Terry White in Belconnen up the supermarket end.

Thanks both.

I tried the hospital, but they only loan them out to people who have been inpatients.

Will try mobility matters.

Try places like Mobility Matters in Fyshwick.

Once upon a time you could ask the hospital for a loan of crutches or a wheelchair. Not so sure these days. Maybe it is worth a try?
