Zoo expansion underway?

Anyone else noticed the new cleared strip and big animal-proof fence erected around the pine forest south of the Zoo? It’s gone up over the past few weeks and seems to surround about half of the forest area between the zoo and the river/parkway. Is the long-planned zoo expansion finally underway? Nothing on their website. What else could it be?

**EDIT**
My last sentence should read:

“I know no more on this though & what I do know I can say no more.

Work is currently being prepared for a fit out for the zoo with the company doing the work receiving a few items for the zoo fit out. The thing is that the goods were delivered to the company’s office & not the NZ&A.
I know no more on this though & what I do know I can so no more.

Both would be good Felix … most of the animals at the Werribee Zoo aren’t in any sort of cages at all – it is all open range, and vastly preferable to other forms of zoos where the animals are kept in enclosures.

I agree with Postalgeek, I’d rather see bigger enclosures for the animals rather than cabins for humans.

I heard a rmour that they were building some cabins, for a complete overnight zoo experience. They do this at the Werribee Open Range Zoo, and it is fabulous. Not sure they’d get quite the same effect in Canberra, but it might be a fun thing for tourists to do.

Yes, I would say so. More space for the animals the better. Heartening to see animals rescued from pocket zoos and cages. One of the sun bears definitely looks like it was in a cage for too long, poor thing. The zoo’s expensive to visit, but I doubt they make much profit and I’d like to think that the experience and the money is doing something positive, unlike a lot of entertainment these days.
