FASHFEST has once again kicked off with a bang last night. The event will be running every night until Saturday with each night having a different theme.

Last night’s theme was ‘The Artist’, and the show lived up to the name, with creative ensembles ranging from ice cream cone hats and woolly tassel dresses to gothic luxury ballgowns and tote bags that transformed into coats.

WND.LND seemed to draw its inspiration from nostalgic pastel colours and made repetitive use of ice cream imagery. This collection lulled me into a happy stupor, and had me craving many of the pieces in the collection (and also a rainbow paddle-pop). The designs reminded me of the ‘Love Pink’ section of the Victoria’s Secret runway shows, where year after year we see gorgeous models in cutesy, themed adornments that would put a smile on anyone’s face.

Another highlight of the evening was the Rockstars and Royalty segment. Like last year, the label showcased a collection of decadent gothic-style pieces. The first half of the show was filled with black formal gowns and cocktail dresses, while the second half was made up of similar styles in white. Belinda Riding, the face of FASHFEST, came out draped in glittering white like a Grecian goddess, while several other dresses had a distinct Marie Antoinette feel to them. The intricacy of the designs was breathtaking, and the models looked like they belonged in an opulent fantasyland surrounded by clouds and Ferrero Rochers.

Other designers included Reneira, who showcased a very wearable line of tailored pants, dresses and blazers that is sure to go down well in the Canberra market. The Darling Sisters showed their signature vintage-style clothing and swimwear. The new online platform, Stagelabel, presented a number of different pieces ranging from urban to whimsical. All designs were complemented by footwear from Octavia shoes.

We also got to see a taste of the graduating class of CIT’s final works, with more on show at tonight’s FASHFEST instalment.
