Nick Kyrgios stuns Rafael Nadal with a four set win

By 2 July 2014 5

Nick Kyrgios has done the impossible overnight knocking world number one Rafael Nadal out of Wimbledon.

Our newest local sporting hero beat Nadal in four sets – 7-6 (7-5) 5-7 7-6 (7-5) 6-3.

In what will go down as one of the biggest upsets in Wimbledon history, Kyrgios world ranking is set to rise to No 66 – only 18 months ago his ranking was No 828.

Kyrgios now faces Canadian eighth seed Milos Raonic for a spot in Friday’s semi-finals.

I went to bed mid-way through the 3rd set thinking he’d done enough already to be really proud of him. I stayed awake long enough to see he won the tie-break. I dozed off for a bit and woke up again when he was up 4-2 in the fourth.

I had to get up again and watch to see if he could serve out the match. He was so impressive at 5-3, there was no signs of visible nerves, just complete composure and inner confidence. Truly impressive.

It’s nice too that I, and many others, were able to see him play in a comparatively low wattage round robin tournament at North Woden Tennis Club last year. And now he’s on the big stage and delivering big results!

Well done to him, his family and all the local coaches who have helped him find his feet.

Let’s hope Kyrgios can stay grounded, not get too cocky and seek inspiration from the usually statesman-like way Roger and Rafa respect the game and their opponents.

Good on Nick! But feeling proud of something in which you played no part is a bit naff.

Hmmmm…..I suspect that “Naff” isn’t a good thing ?

Can anyone explain to me what “Naff” means ?

That said, I agree with you, one can still be proud of something in which one played no part in.
