Dining with the girl geeks

By Aurelius 15 January 2009 13

Hail to the Hivemind,

Those of you who remember Loquaciousness will know she’s quite active in the IT arena, and so she’s organising an event she asked me to mention here on RiotACT. Details:

Girl Geek Dinners have been successful all around the world, including Melbourne, Sydney and most recently Brisbane. Now it’s Canberra’s turn!

Girl Geek dinners offer an opportunity for geeks of all varieties (and both genders – men are welcome at the invitation of a woman attending the event) to have a fun, relaxed and informal get together. Each dinner will feature speakers on a range of topics, from technical to business subjects to gaming and mentoring.

The dinners aim to bring people together, to encourage them to embrace their passion for technology and to further explore what can be achieved with it. It’s about making real changes to policy and social stereotypes by breaking down the barriers.

A date and time have now been set for the inaugural Geek Girl Canberra dinner …. More info can be found on the Geek Girl Dinners Canberra blog.

Are you still able to come, peterh?

Gargamel, coz she asked me to do it. She spends a lot more of her time doing work, whereas I spend a lot of mine surfing threads on RA 🙂

Why isn’t L posting this herself?

If I was only 30 years yoinger I would show the girls all about band practice.

I’d love to attend a geek dinner or similar, but barely know any girls, let-or-loan any geeky ones.
Anyone know of any events which don’t require an invite?

Sounds pretty gay to me…

Of course, peterh!

: )

Great that it’s come to Canberra – remember US contacts talking about such things. And by talking, I mean blogging, of course :p

as the girl geeks have to invite a guy geek for them to attend, any chance, granny?

Granny 2:44 pm 15 Jan 09

I would love to join the Luddite Faction! I’ve found my true inner geek!!

Granny (it seems so odd calling you that!),
Since Miss Loquaciousness is going to attend, I guess I will be too. So if you like, you & I can sit together and form the “Luddite Faction” for those who don’t dream in XML or Javascript.

G’day, Mr Aurelius!

: )

Well, I am definitely interested. I like meeting people once I get past the initial shyness. I’m not really an IT variety geek, though. Do you think this would be for me or not? What does L reckon?

Fantastic idea, BTW!

What an awesome concept. Sadly, my significant other is not geeky in the slightest regard, so I doubt I’ll be making it. Hope it goes swimmingly.
