4WD Experience Courses near Canberra?

My mother-in-law is visiting for a couple of months from Spain and she mentioned that she’d love to have a go at driving a 4WD off-road. As her birthday (60th) is coming up I thought it would be a good pressy.

However, I cant find any places that would do this; anyone got any ideas or know of somewhere?

I can find 1 & 2 day 4WD courses, but these spend most of the first day teaching non-behind-the-wheel stuff like wheel replacement, planning, recovery, etc (IE. Stuff a person wanting to learn 4WDing would need). I just want to be able to stick her in a 4WD next to a qualified instructor and have her spend a couple of hours driving up/down steep hills and through deep water etc….

I guess I could take her out in the Brindies in the Sierra for a few hours & see what we find. Dunno about the deep water though, I’ve already drowned it in 0.8m of water.

I’ve got a mate that does this sort of thing – tailor made 4WD excursions around the district. I don’t know the name of his business, but I’ve sent him the link. Cheers.

You could try approaching one of the local clubs like Southern Tablelands or ACT 4WD club and see if a club member will take you along on an outing. They have websites you can contact them through.

Your last sentence is a little unclear on whether you want your MIL to have a go at driving herself, but don’t expect any club member, or anyone for that matter, to let a novice skip theory and have a go themselves at steep ascents/descents and deep water crossings in an expensive 4WD.

But as long as you’re happy to be a passenger, I imagine you could work something out.

Unfortunately, the ACT government deems four wheel driving an activity too dangerous for everyone to enjoy, hence the road closures whenever a few drops of rain falls on the Brindabella ranges. Our national parks are locked up to prevent this kind of behavior and private property owners are discouraged by the possibility of being sued if someone hurts themselves whilst on their land. Welcome to the real world, where we don’t have to accept responsibility for our own actions, we just get wrapped up in legislation that protects us from ourselves.
The same goes for trail bike riding, an off road experience that you can’t enjoy anywhere because it’s likely to end up with someone going to court because they fell off.

Thanks Rossco & Cheap….

I’d looked at the Vic Widman & the Adrenalin stuff but unfortunately neither hit the nail. GreatDivideTours courses are 2-day and Adrenalin too far (and perhaps too full on; those 4wd monster’s are just full-on – may go and get a go for my own b’day! :-)).

I’m really looking for a 1-2 hour thing using a 4wd Land-Cruiser type car. But I’ve searched for a day-or-so now and I don’t reckon anyone (at least within 500km) does one 🙁

I’ve seen people fooling around in the Brindies. Perhaps a 4WD club or such like?

I think it’d be worth going a little further afield and checking out one of these: http://www.adrenalin.com.au/driving-experiences/4wd-training/

I meant to say that they will do the one on one thing too

Try Vic Widman of greatdividetours.com.au who hold a course near Braidwood on the Nerriga Road. A while ago, my wife and I did a weekend course and apart from an hour or so at the start of the weekend it was all practical.
