Now that you’ve recovered from You Are Here and The Village, it’s time to get ready for TEDxCanberraSalon. On Wednesday 17 April, TEDxCanberraSalon will showcase TED talks and Australian presenters with ideas on climate change, technology, and urban design.
If you’re wondering what TEDxCanberra is, it’s been running every Spring since 2010 as an independently organised TED event. TEDxCanberra is a one-day event, held each Spring, and is run by volunteers (I’m just one of many) who are passionate about ideas worth spreading. Speakers have included Stephen Coleman, Leslie Cannold, Brian Schmidt, Francis Owusu, and Julie Posetti. You can watch the talks on YouTube after the event, or on TED.com (some of the TEDxCanberra talks have had hundreds of thousands of views). But it’s so much more fun to actually be there and join in the discussion with the other attendees. Getting a ticket isn’t expensive, but they do sell out fast – in as little as 30 minutes – so most of the attendees join the email newsletter to be first to hear when registrations open.
Luckily for TEDx addicts like me, we don’t have to wait til Spring to get our dose of discussion. TEDxCanberraSalon is being held as a midweek, afternoon event. Much easier to take an afternoon off work than shuffling the Saturday sports and social events. Ticket prices are much lower than the full-day event, too. And the speaker lineup is awesome:
- Jahla Gato is an ANU graduate in philosophy and climatology, DJ, and alternative fashion designer.
- Marcus Dawe is CEO of GreenMag Group and Mineral Carbonation International (MCi).
- Will Grant is a writer, talker, researcher, thinker, and professional troll at the Australian National Centre for the Public Awareness of Science at ANU. I suspect a few Rioters might like to get some tips from him on being a professional troll 😉
- Mark Pesce is an entrepeneur and inventor, and is often called on by ABC radio and TV to talk about technology and society. He’s been working on the Internet of Things as founder of Moore’s Cloud.
- Tony Wong is Chief Executive Officer of the Cooperative Research Centre for Water Sensitive Cities, working on sustainable urban design and water use as an academic professor and urban design expert.
