Mine would be 8 in a 1973 Honda Civic 2-door… my friend’s first car when we were at school and all anyone could afford was old shitboxes. I remember the guy in the boot kept peering out to see where we were and we had to keep yelling at him to stop it lol. I’m pretty sure we only had to go a couple of suburbs.

PB of sixteen people in the ’64 Studebaker Cruiser sedan – with floor-shift manual – it was 7 in the front seat and 9 in the back.

Six jammed in a metallic purple ’73 Honda Zot 360cc microcar.

When I was at school, our whole cricket team once or twice piled into the teacher/coach’s car to get to a game – and it was only Corolla/Datto size. But we were only in grade 6 at the time.

This guy is a good kid. As someone mentioned above me that people do this when only one or two of the people in the social circle that have their licenses. He honestly is a good driver and WAS NOT intoxicated at all.

This is the sort of stuff teenagers do. They’ve been doing it for…oh i dont know 45 years. Get over because honestly i bet most of the people that read this came to this thread because it reminded them of themselves when they were a teen. A fair call, JB. I had to have my life saved twice buy other people due to my own stupidity (having your stomach pumped sux!) and I’ll be eternally grateful to them. But if my kids ever do half the stuff I did I’ll never sleep again for fear of what may happen.

That said, I reserve the right to become an elderly curmudgeon. And don’t get me started on what passes for what passes for fashion or music today, *waffle, snort, grumble…*

Overloading a car is something that kids will do when only a small number of them have access to a car.

When they get older they just drink drive in larger numbers.

As the driver did not blow DUI in the report this could well be considered the more responsible option.

It’s one of those things IMHO that is going to happen, and when they get caught they need to take their lumps to discourage the others.

But getting all huffy and condemnatory, is either hypocritical or a sign of a youth insufficiently lived for mine.

I remember a story a couple of months ago of something similar in Queensland where a young bloke driving a bigger car (statesman or something similar)had 7 on board with two in the boot. Needless to say that didn’t end well and I believe both boot riding passengers lost their lives. I think these guys are very lucky the police pulled them over before they killed themselves.

Teenagers do dumb things and no doubt, very dangerous things.

I’d say they could charge almost everybody, especially the driver. Three seatbelts in the back and two in the front. Even if done up that still 6 un-belted people. I’d also suggest vision was impaired every-which-way except forwards, but then you’d also have to argue that the driver was neither forward looking or visionary! I’d also suggest there are lawys for overloading a vehicle, carrying people in teh boot etc..

When I was at school, a mate of mine used to ‘borrow’ his mums car. She was a driving instructor and said car had dual left-hand/right hand controls. Now that was a stupid idea with my mate driving while the other one of us that called shotgun invariably also taking control of the car at various points in our journey (i.e. hitting the clutch, brake, accelerator, grabbing the steering wheel or various combinations thereof, while my m,ate struggled with his controls). Loads of minor accidents with bins, letterboxes etc. but no-one dead or injured. If I found my kids doing that, I’d kill them!

I can not believe people are bragging about how unsafe they were/are.

With role models like this, its no wonder barely anyone bats an eyelid when this happens.

If someone has that much disregard for their and their friends safety, I expect they would care even less about that of a fellow motorist.

So a clapped out people mover (with 11 seats) would have been acceptable? Not at all sure which I would consider safer.

another time in south africa, where some cars don’t even have seat belts in the back, cruising around in a baki (ute) at 6am after a massive bender. the road toll there over the christmas period was something like 700 the year we were there.

if my daughter even thought about doing that in her future, i’d kill her!!

Was one of 17 in a Sunbeam Alpine quite a long time ago. It was a very slow trip on a flat wide road. When the cops stopped laughing 15 of us had to walk home.

Glad they didn’t have a fatal. Now that would’ve resulted in the Roadside Memorial from Hell.

Our best effort was 16 in a people mover of some type. (I don’t know what type it was as I had drunk a fair bit by that stage)

There’s definitely a crime been committed by the driver, but realistically this if the passengers chose to get into the car, the consequences are on their heads.

We can argue whether they are stupid, physics plain doesn’t care.

10 people from Goulburn to Canberra after a friend had his car breakdown on the way from Sydney.

It was a Nissan Skyline:
3+ 1(me) in the front.
6 in the back.
The person stradling the centre console had to skoot back everytime I went into 2nd or 4th. No way this would have been possible if half of the peeps hadn’t been thinnish teenage girls. It was winter and the windows fogged up so quickly it would have been impossible to see the overload apart from through the windscreen.

I was 19 I think.

9 people in a suzuki sierra. driver (obviously), 2 front seat, 3 back seat, back door open with 3 hanging off there. This wasn’t on the road though, just a couple hundered meters down a beach.

Don’t know about neg driving, but I am pretty sure the driver get one fine per unrestrained passenger.

From a cave back to camp at Wee Jasper many moons ago we had somewhere around 15-20 in a Mazda 323 wagon. The wheel arches were scraping the tires, the towball was dragging on the road, and be didn’t beat more then about 20km/h.

I stuffed 5 schoolfriends (and me) into the cab of my falcon ute to do a very important hamburger run to Manuka (about a km along the road), back in the days when they sold hamburgers in Manuka.

I remember one cold August night many years ago getting a ride home from Rudes in Manuka in the back of a mates ute – along with the rest of the 4th grade forward pack and a couple of centres thrown in. My mate got pulled over for a random breath test on Canberra Ave. We in teh back were quite as church mice but the copper must have suspected something and asked my mate to lift the tarp – there we were packed in like drunk sardines. He asked where we were headed – which was the ANU – told us that we were fcuking idiots and then sent us on our way with the promise that if he saw the ute out on the roads again that night he’d be less inclined to be so lenient.

Once saw that number in a V8 Commodore. Unfortunately this was after the driver of said Commodore had wrapped it around a tree. Driver dead, one passnger lost a leg, a few others requiring hospitalisation. Surprisingly, the ones who came off with the least injuries were the ones in the boot.

umm not sure if this counts JB, but in 1982 I managed 22 people into a Kombi…………..it was 11 bucks a car load at the starlight drive-in.

Everyone parked outside the gate and got into my car. Worked out to 50 cents each for a movie marathon.

We all just sat outside the cafe. It was a good night.
