What’s the best outfit to wear on a shopping trip?

Firstly, it needs to be comfortable enough to walk around in for a few hours. Secondly, it needs to be easy to slip on and off in the change rooms. And thirdly, it needs to be cute, because this IS Canberra, and it’s like a proven law of physics that if you go out looking like crap you are basically guaranteed to run into someone you know.

Today we’ve put together all of these elements in a totally thrifted outfit:

Black jumper – $5 Salvos Mitchell
Striped shirt – $7 Vinnies Belconnen
Boyfriend jeans – $9 Salvos Jamison
Ballet flats – $2 Vinnes Dickson
Yellow quilted bag – $6 Lifeline Queanbeyan

Up top we’ve gone for a classic black jumper that would be appropriate for almost any situation. It’s great for the office worn with a pencil skirt or dress pants, but would work equally well as a casual piece with jeans or a cute mini skirt. The high neckline keeps it modern and it’s the perfect light layer for daytime. If you get hot running around you can take it off and tie it around your neck like one of those fancy country club people.

Under our jumper we’ve chosen a classic blue and white striped shirt. It’s actually a men’s Ralph Lauren shirt so it was a steal at just $7 from Vinnies Belconnen! I often find that if you want to look a little dressier in winter, it helps to have a preppy collar popping out from your under your jumper. Without it, the ensemble is getting dangerously close to Steve Jobs’ signature style territory.

On our lower half we’ve opted for comfortable boyfriend jeans in a lighter wash to balance out the black we’re wearing up top. The slouchiness means they’re perfect for clothes shopping, as they’re much easier to slip on and off in the change rooms. Roll them at the cuff to expose your sexy ankles and let everyone know you’re cool like Audrey Hepburn.

To top off this otherwise minimal outfit, we’ve added a pop of colour with this neon quilted Chanel look-a-like. The long chain strap means you can sling it across your body, leaving your hands free for important tasks like holding your takeaway coffee and rifling through racks of clothes.

Lastly, for footwear, we’re rocking classic neutral ballet flats (as seen in our casual brunch look). These are one of the most important features of the outfit, as they’ll allow you to pound the pavement for hours in comfort. There’s no laces, zippers or socks to meddle with when you’re trying on potential new shoe purchases, so that’s an added bonus.

Putting all of the elements together, we end up with a comfortable but chic look that’s prefect for a day of browsing the racks. The total look comes in at just $29 , so you’ll have plenty of change left over for your retail therapy session!

What do you think of our op-shopped outfit? Have you thrifted anything cool lately?
