On September 12 2009 Canberra is going under. The now decommissioned HMAS Canberra that is.
The Brisbane Times informs us (nothing from our local rage that I could find) that the second RAN ship to go by the name Canberra is to be scuttled off Victorian waters to become a divers paradise. The Victorians seem to be over the moon with this with the Victorian Artificial Reef Society (VARF) having set up a website dedicated to the Canberra, holding a ball in honour of the sinking and containing a far more detailed history and statistics page than any I could find on wiki or on the Royal Australian Navy’s own site.
It seems the VARF put a lot of effort into lobbying to get HMAS Canberra sunk as a diving reef off their coast. It just seems a pity that with a reasonably strong diving community here in Canberra we didn’t have the fore-thought to have out namesake scuttled in Javis Jervis Bay to have our own divers paradise.
