I’m sure that ACT labour promisedto introduce a Hard Rubbish Collection as part of their election promises.

I can’t find anything online though – it is so annoying searching for anything ‘act’ related, as ‘act’ is also such a common word.

This is ACT Governments attempt to look “green” by doing bugger all to serve its residents and squeeze even more money out of them at the tip. It is a disgrace that we can’t even dispose green waste. Its about time they pulled their finger out and brought our services in to line with every other Government and Council in Australia. The green excuse is a cop out and a rather poor attempt at that.

True. But they will be thinking “oh, if everyone put stuff on the nature strip at random then the city would look a mess blah blah blah”. Then there’s the issue that some lawyer has advised they may be liable if someone trips over a bookcase on the nature strip (govt land) when the resident hasn’t registered blah blah blah.

I agree the administrative aspects are a PITA. Which is why I never pay attention to SHS and get rid of my surplus stuff via Freecycle or direct delivery to Revolve or the Salvos if it will fit in my car.

Green waste I have a problem with because the only way to get it recycled is to DIY at home or DIY delivery which I cannot do. I tried and tried to get a trash pack for recycling but couldn’t. Which means I have to pay $$$ for someone ELSE to dump my green waste in the landfill, which I could do (in theory) by putting it in my wheelie bin except I’m not allowed.

I agree with Miz that there are many aspects of the Nowaste policy that are a crock.

I already use other recycling services like Freecycle or taking it to the tip myself. What annoys me is the Govt trying to get us to jump through administrative hoops (like register, put up their poster etc) when we can already do the same thing without the administrative silliness. People are more likely to put in extra effort when there’s a benefit to doing so – and there’s nothing that Second Hand Sunday does that cannot be done any other day of the week for less effort.

One of those rare times I agree with WMC.
If the routine is too much, then just check out of anyone else is registered near you, and then jam your stuff out with a guarantee of passing ‘shoppers’.

Or you could do as we did earlier this year – letterboxed the street, got another 6 houses all to chip in to a street garage sale on the Saturday, with plenty of people coming through because of the number in one area. Then anything that was left went out the next morning for SHS. And pfftt to ‘paperwork’.

Not a thing left. And with the garage space afterwards, got a bank of 4 2-door cupboards from Magnet Mart and put everything away. One spacious tidy garage and no cars parked outside. And we got to know some neighbours.

Took couches to the ip this mroning, thinking we didn’t hav one of these collections here.
