As mentioned in previous weeks and the call-out for Canberra Cheap Eats last week, I’ve been keen to branch out of Civic and try some ‘unknown’ eateries. One suggestion received was Double Drummer in Barton. I work close to Barton and had never even heard of this place so I was excited to check it out.
Double Drummer is located on National Circuit, but it is hidden amongst some office buildings and isn’t visible from the street so it is a little tricky to find. There’s not much parking in the area so I parked a few streets away (ordinarily I would have walked from work but it was about 200 degrees outside and I overheat easily, a bit like a Pug) and wandered on over. Thankfully there was a few cute little signs pointing me in the right direction.
First impression of this place is that it looks like a really cool cafeteria. Heaps of seating, giant glass food cabinets, but really trendy decor and fit out. There was food as far as the eye could see; mountains of salads, baguettes piled up high, a giant make-your-own sandwich bar. There was so much choice it was actually a little overwhelming.
I ended up settling on the brown rice salad with eggplant. The staff member informed me as I was ordering that I could choose more than one salad in a serving so I decided to go half half brown rice salad and pesto pasta salad. Even though I was intending on dining in, I had a brain snap and asked for the salad takeaway – oops! It was squished into a container which doesn’t look the most appealing but what it loses in looks it made up for in taste!
Both salads were delicious and there was so much of it. I couldn’t finish it all. Both salads had sundried tomatoes, which I love, and the brown rice salad had generous amounts of crumbed eggplant and pumpkin. The ingredients were fresh and there was so much flavour – cannot fault either dish.
My salad container set me back around $9.00, plus a drink was $11.50 all up which I think is super reasonable. Everything at Double Drummer is priced similarly, except for the burgers which are slighly more expensive at around $12-$13.
I think it’s a shame that Double Drummer is only open Monday-Friday because I think it has serious potential for a weekend brunch spot. I’ll definitely be back!
