Ask RiotACT

Hello. I’m looking for a licensed electrician with a reasonable rate per hour. Ideally, with no call out so preferably local to install LED downlights.

Also, does anyone know how long it would take to put new LED lights in to replace existing downlights which currently have halogen. It’s a straightforward change over; no holes need to be cut out, etc.

Thank you.

I would be more than happy to recommend Stuart and his team at Keeping Current. I have used them more than 20 times through my personal plumbing business, at my own home and I have recommended them to many customers. They are yet to let me down.

Have you considered contacting ACTEWagl ?

They were offering free upgrade of halogen lights to LEDs.

ACTEW were offering free light energy efficient bulbs only – no LEDs.
LED downlights need fitting by an electrician (they have to be plugged into the light circuit).
You are looking at about $30 each for the light (buy in bulk is cheaper) and an electrician should charge about $75- $100 per hour to install them.
Get advice from electrician and even better to get him to supply them.
Try Harry at Kosaris Electrical 0402 228235. He is at Lyneham.

Not quite. Led lights like all lights comes in different styles. With down lights they have led “gloves” that are plug in replacements for low voltage halogens. They also have plug in replacements for 240v down lights too. They also have bayonet led “globes”. None of these require a sparky.

Only reason you would need one is if the current lights are hard wired to the circuit and or the new lights are also hard wired.

I knew that.

“Free LED Downlights”

Previous to this, I just bought the Philips branded LED downlights (MR16 for me) from Bunnings, it’s a simple in-place job, but it will depend on your transformers being compatible. But Bunnings are easy on returns (for me at least). Good luck!

The bulbs ACTEWagl offered me (twice) at my house were not LED downlights – they were those ugly ES things with the mini-flouro tubes. That link is totally misleading.
I asked the ACTEWagl caller if there was a subsidy for householders to fit LED downlights. He said no so I had an electrician supply and install – it cost about $60 a light. The savings were apparent immediately I received the next electricity bill.

Had ACTEWAGL replace my halogens with LED a month ago, no problem. However they wont/cant do dimmable halogens and if your halogens are particularly old and have transformers this will require a different costly fix.

I’ve been using BNV Electrical for my past few jobs. Good to deal with. Work has included rigging new LED lights. http://www.bnvelectrical.com.au/

Define “reasonable rate per hour” as you and I may have differing opinions of what is reasonable

Have you considered looking at AirTasker? You might have some luck there.
